[opensuse] Graphics card installation?
Hi all, I am planning to install a GeForce FX 5500 AGP card in my Suse 10.1 system. I am familiar with the physical procedure (have removed the Wimshurst machine from the room). Can I expect the system to recognize the card and give me a usable display, or do I need to make some adjustments before I install? -ED- P.S. Its good to be getting all the list mail again! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Simple deal. 1. Yank the old one. Install the new one. 2. Pass "runlevel 3" as a boot parameter to start in console mode. or just boot and ctrl+alt+backspace to get to the console. 3. If the old card wasn't nVidia, see AND follow: http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA download the new driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_100.14.19.html you can download the driver from the command line with: "wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/100.14.19/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1..." "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run -q" to install (us lynx as the text mode browser if you need to.) 4. After driver install, configure the display, as root: "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" 5. If all is good, "telinit 5" to get the kdm login back. 6. It all is not good, see step 3 again. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Thanks for the info, David. I am planning to install Suse 10.3 on hdb. Will it recognize the card on install, or will I need to follow the same steps again? (The card is comming in the mail and I could install 10.3 while I wait, if I am going to have to repeat this procedure anyway.) -ED- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Go ahead and install 10.3 with whatever card you have. Once the new card arrives, Then just follow those steps again. No need to wait on the card. I just did the same with an 8600GT 3 days ago. No problem on the install at all. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
