[opensuse] 11.1 Beta 5 -- Help KDE 4?
Listmates, I'm testing Beta 5 and I need help with KDE 4. First, can I get nVidia drivers anywhere for Beta 5? Yast has my 19" display stuck at 800x600 with my 8800GT labeled as a framebuffer graphic card and I can't set the resolution any higher. Second, I can't set wallpaper in configure desktop. I change it in the dialog, and hit apply, but nothing changes. What is the trick? Screensavers? Where in the heck are the screensavers hidden? Taskbar clock, where can I set the font for the date. The default font in unreadable it looks like 5pt. text. Speaking of fonts, what can I do to fix them? The default fonts look horrible. Like some old bitstream font, jagged, etc.. Can I load the freetype with subpixel from 11.0 and have it work, or has the font handling changed such that 11.0 rpms won't work. Other than that, the 11.1 Beta 5 install from the full DVD on x86_64 was flawless on a MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum. All components were identified and configured. It recognized my 11.0 RAID1 install and didn't try to mess with it during install. (I added a spare drive to the box for the 11.1 Beta 5 install.) Amazingly, KDE 4 looks great. It will take a while for me to "digest" where all the pieces are hidden, but not nearly as bad as the first impressions of the 11.0 version. My only hesitation, as I just peek under the lid, are examples like the clock date above. One of the first things I do with any desktop is to configure the display with the information I want to see, and set the fonts to something reasonable. Why the heck can't I just set the font for the date to make it readable?? Why can't I change the wallpaper from the wallpaper drop down in the configure desktop dialog? I don't mind looking for things, I will eventually find them, but I expect them to work when I do stumble across them. Hopefully, those are the only two little surprises that await in KDE 4. If you want KDE 3, the new installer is quite deceptive, so you will have to choose the "other" checkbox when at the desktop selection part of the install. KDE 3 isn't listed anywhere on the desktop selection page. After choosing "other", then if you select details in the software part of the install, you can choose KDE3 there. After install, I was prompted to update the system and prompted for the root password. After typing in the root password, the updater promptly crashed with "policy-kit Fatal Error...". After I restarted yast and got online update going, I was pleased to see "Policy-Kit" updates as the first one. So looks like that will already be addressed for 11.1. My current problems are (1) Can I get nVidia drivers, and ... will that help get my display un-stuck from this 800x600 setting, (2) What do I need to do to get the fonts fixed? ... can I install the subpixel freetype packages from 11.0? What's the trick with the wallpaper? .. I'm allergic to Lima bean green. Lastly, Where do I set the screensaver? I think since the card is stuck as a framebuffer, the screen doesn't really blank, it just goes to the semi-black (supposed to be black, but you can tell the monitor is still full-on). Also, I know this isn't the list for Beta 5 stuff, but the KDE 4 questions are just generic KDE 4 questions. So which list do I need for Beta 5 issues? Factory? -- David C. You could try here:- http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122606 but you will have to build the module the "hard way" and I don't know if they will work with 2.6.27 kernel yet as I am going to have a go sometime this weekend. ... You will have *much* better luck on opensuse-factory@opensuse.org as the reporting, comments and testing take place there. Thanks to you all. Next post will be on factory. I found the screen saver, however that doesn't work. I pray that the nvidia driver (hard way or not) helps with the fonts -- you really can't read some of the dialogs... Thanks again. -- David C.
