It seems that is not from regular Update repository, as I run updates an hour ago, and it is still 2.0.0.22 . Could be, or it could be the aliens or <insert-your-own-pet-hates-here>. I can state, however, that the 23-4.1 copy came from that all singing, all dancing, all to-be-bowed-to 'Vendor: openSUSE Build Service', and the (re-installed) 22 version came from -- wait for it! -- "repo_4" on my computer and "repo_3" on my wife's computer (which do not exist as such in YaST2's Software Repositories list) but which I suspect is really secret code names for 'Vendor: openSUSE; Packager: http://bugs.opensuse.org' :-) . I had the same thing... I forget the exact error though. It was some kind of GTK error - but I get loads of those on various updates since I'm on Factory for KDE4, QT and GTK... so I assumed it was some kind of weird combination I had. The "fix" appears to have been installed earlier today via the auto update of zypper. However, I had to manually install the x.23 version of TB as YaST and zypper did not see any upgrades to TB x.22. You know, this plethora of repositories required to run openSUSE and to also keep being part of the "testing community" is really the Achilles Heel (or Hell?) of openSUSE. The Factory, the Build Service, the Community, the KDE:KDE4:/, the ..../Desktop, etc. and etc. repositories are really a big pain in the rearend. I have always been (since 1986) a person who keeps his OS (any OS) at the "bleeding edge" of development but the recent development in oS have got me really scratching my head as to which repositories I need to be using. It's not simply a matter of saying to me - and to others - "Just stay with the repos. when you installed a/the release version of oS" -- but this will not get 'you' the feedback re the OS which is what oS is all about. Without inferring any suggestion of "His **** is bigger than your ****", I recently installed a daily build of Kubuntu 9.10 (9.10 is work-in-progress as you would know). When I boot it up, I (may) get a message showing that there are updates available. I do not need to look at repos. or alter them (?so far). When there are updates/upgrades I do not have to have to make decisions (based more guesswork than understanding) to resolve dependencies -- like I now get in oS re the application k3b (because of KDE4.3 vs KDE3 versions). And why are these dependency hassles exist in oS? (because of the plethora of repos existing for oS?) OK, end of my (constrained) outburst :-) .

If you compare with Kubunt 9.10, then you should use the Factory version. Install milestone 5 of openSUSE 11.2 and update with zypper dup - just one (or two) repositories that you need, nothing more. But if you want to update some single applications on your 11.1, you have to do it as you described. Do you see a better alternative? Andreas, Please see my response earlier today (21 Aug) to a post by Karl Sinn in the thread "*milestone 5*" in this forum. I would dearly love to install a version of oS 11.2 - of *ANY* MS flavour, including MS5! - for testing. Today I downloaded, from ftp.gwd.de, a copy of the 11.2 KDE4 Live CD of MS6. As in the earlier copies of MS I downloaded, MS6 is - sorry - crap. (And yet other people have alleged that they are running MS5 and now even MS6.) Close to 700MB of my monthly download was wasted today by downloading a CD containing something which doesn't even get anywhere to being close to the point of showing me what 11.2 *may* look like, let alone allow me to install the darn thing. I checked the iso (as the other, earlier ones) for errors using md5sum and - again! - I get the error message that, "no properly formatted MD5 checksum lines found". Checking the actual CD medium using the option on the MS6 CD gives me the error message that, "md5sum wrong" (just like on the earlier MSs). During an attempt to run the CD to get a "live" look-see of 11.2, the operation stops dead with pages full of error messages showing: INIT: ID "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes /etc/initscript: line 137: /sbin/mingetty: Input/output error /etc/initscript: line 137: /sbin/mingetty: Success [the above lines repeated at least 2x then the error msg continues-] INIT: Id "4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes And this sort of sequence is repeated ad nauseum, until I feel that I should say a few nice, choice, words about oS, hit the big red button, go outside, kick the dog next door, then come back and reboot back to 11.1. The glimmer of light this time, however, is that I got the above innumerable pages of error messages whereas in the earlier MS CDs I got a black screen. Progress of some sort, I guess. And just for the record, I only use nVidia cards and have never used intel anything (I am an AMD man, period). You are probably using the wrong command line options. For example, you may try: md5sum issoimagefile.iso which will churn away for a way, and finally print a single line of numbers which you manually (visually) compare with the checksum listed on the site somewhere. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. According to 'man md5sum' I am using the correct command. I have also checked a while back that the application providing md5sum was not upgraded to a newer version which is why I am getting the result that there are no properly formatted lines found- but nothing has been upgraded. Nevertheless, I will at the first opportunity try out your suggested command line entry to check the iso files. But, but, you have to keep in mind that the Check Media in the oS CDs also come up and state that the checksum is wrong -- even k3b comes up with this error when I try and Verify the burning of the iso to the CD. Basil, I stand to be corrected, but I seem to recall that the md5sum for an iso is different to a burned CD. From memory (and not complete at that) you need to add options to indicate the sector size of the CD for it to calculate it correctly. So, check the download md5sum against the published result, but this will not give the same result as a burned CD. Thanks Allen, but when one burns the iso and then boots the Live CD, or the DVD, you have the option to Check the Media to ensure that what you are about to boot/install will be error free. There are no parameters to be specified for this check: the option simply goes away and checks the media. Every check I have made on MS5 and MS6 KDE Live CDs using this option comes up with the error, "md5sum wrong". I've checked earlier versions of oS (both CD and DVD) and the checks all come up positive. I can see why k3b comes up with a verification error because it is comparing apples with oranges but not when the built-in media check in the CD/DVD shows that the media is crap.
