I installed diald to automatically dial my ISP when there is a internet outbound packet going to the ppp0 device.
You folks should take a look at ppp2.3.0. I have been using it for about a
now, with various ISPs, with USR modems, and have had great success. It also features some "diald-like" features. This thing stays lit, and will redial when it senses a disconnect, etc.I had some problems with Hayes and older USR modems though. If you have a recent USR modem, then this will work great.
Note: In the below URL/directory, you'll see ppp2.3.3 - but I have had
year problems
with it.
2.3.0 from these people seems to be a good stable release.
All you have to do to make it work is to run a supplied merge script which incorporates their source into the /usr/src/linux source tree, and then configure and compile your kernel.
They even supply dialup scripts and good docs.
