Ok, I have a small mail server (Suse Pro 8.0) - around 90 users and it works great. Looking at SuSE Knowledge DB, i found that article about mail filters with procmail and postfix. For sure I could use procmail with sendmail as well all I'll need is to rebuild the sendmail.cf and enable the FEATURE(local_procmail). But when I do it, outgoing mail is not delivered anymore (no rules in procmail yet) the log is "Unrecognized host name outgoing.mail" while Incoming mail is correctly processed. FEATURE(dialup) nor FEATURE(promiscuous_relay) nor HACK(nodns) are enabled. Well, anyway my questions are: 1. It seems to me that Postfix has a better and easier integration with procmail, but would that be enaugh for changing from sendmail to postfix, assuming that I would have better tools to fight spam for exemple? 2. What would be the implications and performance impact? What else need to be considered, like users accounts, mailboxes, etc... 3. If there is a better place to those questions, please redirect me there, or any documentation available will do great. AFAIK the sendmail.cf created by SuSEconfig --module sendmail will have FEATURE(local_procmail) enabled by default -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx
Hello Miguel, I was using sendmail since long time ago until... I changed to Cyrus IMAP server, then I added mail accounts for web users (no unix account) from a MySQL DB, then I added Sieve mail management... And you know what? The sendmail configuration is a pain in the ass. So I tried Qmail and Postfix... Both Qmail and Postfix are good, except the license that comes with Qmail. Now your questions:
1. It seems to me that Postfix has a better and easier integration with procmail, but would that be enaugh for changing from sendmail to postfix, assuming that I would have better tools to fight spam for exemple?
Generally speaking postfix is much easier to configure. There is no m4! You can integrate postfix to whatever you want and there is a very active comunity of developers working to add the ultimate state-of-the-art features. To give you an example, I have postfix working in my system, managing email for 4 virtual domain, with different users in each domain. Users are loaded from MySQL db, and even can be authenticated against the db. Mail is delivered to Cyrus IMAP server for some of the mail domains, other domains are delivered to the local Linux user accounts. SSL, TTL, SMTP Authentication, UCE control, blacklist. I am very happy with it. Also... if you ever tried to read the source code of sendmail... you'll know that not only the configuration is complex... :-) Then give a read to the postfix sources!
2. What would be the implications and performance impact? What else need to be considered, like users accounts, mailboxes, etc...
Postfix claims to be much performant than sendmail. My personal experience is... well in an AMD 1800 / 1GB RAM, I didn't get the difference with sendmail :-) About security... postfix is much more a scattered system which helps to isolate problems and improves security.
3. If there is a better place to those questions, please redirect me there, or any documentation available will do great.
Check the postfix web site www.postfix.org Have fun, Pep Serrano

Nobody installs sendmail it the present times anymore for other reasons than: - he is used to it, and doesn't want to learn another, just like Windows users are :) - has working config files or whatever old compatibility stuff Postfix is much easier to configure, can do the same job and more, faster too. qmail is on a comparable level as postfix in regards to performance, sendmail beeing much lower, they say. I don't know how to configure sendmail, and strongly hope to never need to learn. I've been using Postfix everywhere, and been very happy with it. -- Silviu Marin-Caea Systems Engineer Linux/Unix http://www.genesys.ro Phone +40723-267961

Well, I don't fit in any of those cathegories above, but you guys convinced me but: 1. HOWTO migrate from sendmail to postfix? Documentation, scripts, etc would be great. 2. Does anyone has experience with postfix and avgate + antivir from H+BEDV? Thanks again. -- .-. e-SecureNet /v\ We Run SuSE Project Manager // \\ *The LINUX Experts* c/o Miguel Albuquerque /( )\ Av. It comes with the program. /usr/share/doc/packages/postfix Also http://www.postfix.org
2. Does anyone has experience with postfix and avgate + antivir from H+BEDV?
It's explained in antivir docs. I've been using it for a period, before RAV.
