[S.u.S.E. Linux] Netscape downloading binaries as text to screen?
I attempted to download KDE 1.0 from the SuSE FTP site, and instead of getting regular downloads, I got downloads to the screen. Using Netscape Communicator 4.04, is there a cure for this? ------------------------------------------- Man's mind is his basic tool of survival! Yes, hold shift and click on the link. It'll bring up the saveto box like you want it to. -- Aaron Seelye <A HREF="http://revolution.3-cities.com/~roberto"><A HREF="http://revolution.3-cities.com/~roberto</A">http://revolution.3-cities.com/~roberto</A</A>> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Thank you! This works!!! BTW, why is it set up this way, instead of to default to binary download, as most all other FTP sites do? ------------------------------------------- Man's mind is his basic tool of survival! I don't know. some http pages are like that too. i haven't seen any rhyme or reason to the way netscape works for downloading. for ftp though, i've been much happier with ncftp, no chance of a problem there :) .
It's not magic or anything: Netscape simply trys to display unregistered mime types because it doesn't know what else to do with them. You can : A) Hold shift while you click on the link to bring up the dialog box B) Register the offending mime types with Netscape so it knows what to do with them in the future Aaron Seelye wrote:

If you register offending mime types with netscape you won't run into this. Aaron Seelye wrote:

Can you explain how to register mime types in Netscape Communicator 4.04? ------------------------------------------- Man's mind is his basic tool of survival! Edit preferneces, Navigator Applications, New: bz2 application/bz2 bz2 Unknown:Prompt user There, you just registered .bz2 and the dialog box will pop up whenever you click on a .bz2 in the future. To register .mp3: mp3 audio/mp3 mp3 Unknown:Prompt user You get the idea. I use bz2 on any file over 3 megs, and looking through my httpd_access.log this really confuses people. I thought holding shift down in Netscape was common knowledge, I was doing that in windows netscape before I even started using linux. Hope this helps. -- ==================================================================== Michael Lankton <A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org"><A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org</A">http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org</A</A>> ==================================================================== - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Same basic plan but choose Edit, Preferences, Navigator, Applications. phil Lawrence Sayre wrote:

Use shift + left click or right click on the link and choose "Save as..." netscape will then propose you to save the file. Best regards, Mickael - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

hold down the shift key......works for me on all netscape versions. there is a way to include this in the applications sections so it does it automatically...but cant remember at this point...others amy come in on this later..... ch - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I believe Netscape "decides" what to do with files based upon their MIME type; in 3.x go to Options, General Preferences, Helpers. In the table are listed the MIME types Netscape knows about and what it will do when encountering that type. I believe that 'scape looks at the filename suffix to determine the MIME type. By default, it displays unconfigured MIME types, but you can edit the table to add types or change the default behavior. phil Chris Herrnberger wrote:

Try Edit / Navigator / Applications / (file type then edit and click save to disk checkbox) On Sun, 19 Jul 1998, you wrote: - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I use lynx most of the time. I think with netscape you have to hold the shift key down. If I'm wrong I'm sure the response will be forthcoming.:-) -M One is most dishonest towards one's God; he is not _permitted_ to sin. mail: mjohnson@pop3.aebc.com - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Lynx will do the same thing btw. In lynx just hit "D" instead of "Enter" when that happens. hekate@intergate.bc.ca wrote:
