I'm trying to install SuSE 9.1 to my computer, but the computer hang in hardware detection... Any idea what I can do?

Terence I used the manual install option when 9.1 hung up after screen message about USB.

If I were you, I'd switch off or unplug all peripherals except your internet link (modem or lan/adsl), including USB. Then try again. I have noticed some slowdown on loading when SuSE Linux loads if I have any USB connnections plugged in/on. HTH. Terence

I have three devices connected via USB at home and do not have any problems booting with them connected. 1. USB printer 2. external USB sound 3. USB camera -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)

I'm using a Trust 4-socket expansion kit (plugged to one USB port on the mb, and using a front slot). I don't think this could be the problem, and I don't have a problem plugging in USB after loading. I have had some boots halted at the USB point using 9.0, but not with 9.1 (so far!). Terence

I meant to add: Once installed use YAST to install printers etc. Sorry. Terence

Please excuse my jumping in here. I had exactly the same problem installing 9.1, and arrived independently (and accidentally, I might add) at the same solution. And it DOES work, up to a point. That point being when I plug in my USB Zip drive after completing the install, and Linux flatly refuses to acknowledge its existence. I've tried about everything I could find in the archives regarding USB detection and hotplugging without success. Since your reply suggests that a) you installed SuSE 9.1 after unplugging all your USB devices, and b) when you plugged them in again, they worked, I'd welcome any ideas you may have. Cheers, Gordon Keehn

Hi, Gordon, I may have misled inadvertently- I had some problems (slow boots, boot hanging) when using SuSE 9.0, when USB devices were plugged in, whether or not they were switched on. (In another reply I have pointed out that I am using a Trust USB 4-way extension from one of the mb sockets). When I installed 9.1 (clean install), I had no devices plugged in, neither did I when I upgraded from 9.0 on another drive. I have had no problems with 9.1 and USB (tempts fate, crosses fingers), but this may be because I only have "plug-in when I need them" devices, and none were plugged in when I installed. I have had no problems with 9.1- but that may be because of the above. Terence

When I performed a clean install of 9.1 I had no devices plugged in. (As noted above, the install hung *if* my USB Zip drive was plugged in.) The difference appears to be that once the install completes, the drive (when plugged in) is not recognized. I have no problem rebooting with the drive plugged in; I just can't use it for anything but a paperweight. (Note that after walking across the room and plugging it into my Win2K box, the drive works fine.) Cheers, Gordon Keehn

I had a problem similar to the one you mentioned except it was for my 7-in one card reader. It would not recognize my device at all. What I did is loaded the usbview rpm and open up usbview. When I did this, the devices started to be recognize without any problems. I notice that SUSE 9.1 is a bit more hit and miss on the usb devices. On Fri, 2004-06-11 at 09:00, Gordon Keehn wrote:

Would this be the TwinMOS 7-in-1 card reader? Sounds very familiar! Terence

In my installation, I have found any storage device that is hung on the usb bus seems to hang the system up. You might want to initially try removing your USB connection and see if that helps on your boot sequence/ On Fri, 2004-06-11 at 08:34, Terry Bassett wrote:
