Read the instructions of the window manager to install. For example, for kde you have a script to make all that you should do before running it. You just have to comment ('#') all the entries in the .xinitrc that sound about a window manager and finally put the kde script at the end (I think is called startkde). To run the twm or the fvwm I think you just have to change 'fvwm2' in .xinintrc by 'twm' or 'fvwm'. Oh! And if you don't have a .xinitrc (I think root doesn't have at first) you can generate it from the X (in fvwm2) . Click the left button and choose configure wm.
