[SLE] problems mounting /cdrom as User
I have an odd problem. (OK one of many) I created a user account for myself for security reasons. However, I am not able to mount the cdrom. I keep getting messages from mount saying that only root can mount. However, I've tried a number of combinations of fstab options listings for the cdrom including: noauto, user user, noauto noauto, users users, noauto Nothing seems to work. I checked the permissions on the devices and the mount point and they all allow user read access. What am I doing wrong? Well, this is my entry in /etc/fstab: /dev/scd0 /cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto, user 0 0 Does the /cdrom directory (or your equivalent) have execute permissions? When working with directories, 'execute' permissions are probably better called 'access' permissions... maybe you're using secured permissions in SuSE. if so, SuSEconfig removes suid bit for mount and umount which prevents you from mounting/umounting hd, cdrom, even floppy. edit /etc/permissions.secure and set permissions to 4755 in mount and umount lines. in /etc/fstab, I set cdrom to ro,noauto, user, exec. hope this helps, Gwendal Chris Reeves wrote:

Thank you for replying, Yes, I am using a very secure set of permissions. I changed mount and umount so they have the setuid bit set. Now I am able to mount and umount as user. However, I realized that this has nothing to do with my main problem, that is as User none of my audio programs like Grip and Krabber, etc seem to be able to see the cdrom drive. As root they work fine. I am still looking at various permissions to see what is going on. I noticed that there is an Audio group and I added that to my user account, but nothing changed. Is the Super Duper bit set for the group for the apps. You can try this: chmod 6755 app1 -rwsr-sr-x ^ ^ | +----- Group setuid +-------- User setuid

Hmmm. I don't like all this 'suid'ing business. I would check the permissions on the /cdrom directory itself. Usually if it's a CDROM you won't have any problems letting everyone have r and x permissions. Just temporarily set it to 777 and see whether all these programs start working...

These programs access the cdrom device directly, so you have to have read permission on it. If your cdrom is /dev/hdc, do a chmod +r /dev/hdc Ciao, Stefan -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Yes, most likely the permissions will be reset to their original values then. To prevent this, add /dev/hd? root.disk 644 to /etc/permissions.local.
