I bought a 64-bit laptop without a serial port, then I bought a USB-to-Serial convertor that luckily was compatible, supported in 2.6.x with the pl2303 driver. One suggestion in case you don't get a positive answer, email support@ramelectronics.net and ask what the chips are for the serial and parallel ports, then check for kernel support of those chips. Hi guys, I just got back to linux after a REALLY long excursion in the UNIX world, and everything seems to have changed. Can anyone please tell me how to enable my telnet service again? I remember on redhat there was this "setup" utility Thanks Bona __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! Messenger. http://messenger.yahoo.com/

You need telnet-server to be installed. It's on the SuSE CDs... But I'd recommend you (sure others will also do) to install/use ssh instead, as telnet is insecure. Martin
Thanks Bona
You may also want to shift the incoming port to a higher one...just to confuse those that need to be confused. :) On Thu, 27 May 2004, Martin Mielke wrote:

Have you activated the service? most likely you would like to use xinet. Install that to. then you have to configure your telnet file in /etc/xinet.d/ It should not be so difficult to figure out how to configure. The defaults for xinet are in /etc/xinet.conf good luck Jonas PS. Please answer /only/ to the list... -- Jonas Helgi Palsson

He may need to open the appropriate ports in his firewall on the server
or turn off the firewall. That will cause the same error.

Even your passwords get sent as plain text with telnet, I always use ssh. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.

Like everyone else here says YOU DON'T WANT TO USE TELNET, DON'T EVEN INSTALL IT. (Ok, done shouting). Chances are that ssh is Already installed. Use Putty to connect to your box. Its free. I can't believe anyone in the Unix world is still recommending telnet either. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I second this. Telnet is dead. It's one of thôose things that changed during your long excursion.... Jerry
