[SuSE Linux] ATI mach 64?
I just picked up a 2 meg pci ATI mach 64 card, installed the mach 64 server, ran xf86config to direct it to the new server... no problem. problem---> I seem to have lost about 1 inch from the top of my monitor and a little from the bottom! the resolution is640x480 800x600 1024x1024 all the same for 8bpp/16/24/32 The previous setup was an onboard card (this is on a compaq deskpro p90) with Im assuming 1M ram the difference in resolution is *slight* compared to my onboard setup I was told that a 2M would be more than adequate for web browsing, xgames etc, but the difference is minimal and Im not really happy about loosing an inch from my screen... did I miss something in the configuration? Was I "misguided"? any suggestions? thanks rob Linux Home page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
Have you tried playing with the controls on your monitor. There should be several , that will controll width , hight , ect... This may help solve your problem. Hope this helps. Samy At 06:14 PM 12/29/1998 -0500, you wrote:

Thanks, This is a fairly *low end* <read> junker monitor... its a ALR Flex view 2x svga, thats seen better days The perplexing thing is running the original onboard it seemed ok. The first thing I noticed was the black space on the screen :-o Ive tried different modes in xf86 none of that makes any difference The card came with several *setup disks* but all for win/dos/os2 (doubt if any *setup disk* would do anything anyway, in Linux -G-) It installed easy enough just changed the pci snoop setting in the bios, installed the mach 64 server with yast and ran xf86...Is this a decent card? would this work better on a slightly better monitor? maybe Ill move one of my *other* junkers over and see -G- perplexed rob Linux Home page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

rob, i've had similar problems with my 4meg ati rage II+DVD. after fiddling around for about two hours with settings and everything, i finally settled for losing the half inch because a) i've got a 17" monitor, and it's not _that_ much of a problem, and b) using the rage card with the mach 64 driver is at _least_ twice as fast as using the 4 meg nvidia card that came with my system and the svga server! i only lose the half inch when i'm running the highest resolution, anyway. btw, i'm using the drivers that came on the the 5.3 disk set...perhaps my problem will be cleared up if i switch to the new version of xf86. -- -derek "Strange times are these in which we live; when the old and the young are taught falsehoods in the schools of learning, and the one man that dares to tell the truth is called at once a lunatic, and a fool." --Plato - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
Use the ustility SAX to configure your X server. After making all your selections you can adjust the height, width and the vert and horz positions. If that doesn't work use xvidtune. This is more tricky so you better read the man pages first. I have no idea about the refresh rate hortzontal or vertical setting needed in sax. My monitor isnt listed and I spent quite a while combing the net for the specs to no avail at all ALR FlexVIEW 2X svga I did dl the new xf86 package and new mach 64 from SuSEs site I admit the resolution is *much better*, but my monitor still has 1.25 blank on top and .75 blank on the bottom. the actual glass measures 10.5 x 8" desktop-->9.5 x 6.75" I beleive thats called a 14" monitor?? Also, when trying to switch between modes... ctrl&alt&num+ or - dosnt work at all. ANY ideas? thanks rob Linux Home page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Ok- I tried the xvidtune... While it did improve the resolution it did nothing for the screen size. It would move the screen around but not eliminate any of the black border. Ive read and printed the man page, tried adjusting... it would get to the maximun and then beep to signify no more adjustment was possible, Id check apply and Im still left with a very small x desktop. My real gripe is... the onboard card gave me a much larger desktop but with much lower resolution Ive visited SuSe site FAQ where it talks about this exact problem but the suggestions dont seem to work in my situation. any other ideas? (please tell me if you think Im missing something...) thanks rob Linux Home page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

I have always had better results setting up X with XF86Setup, especially with the newer ATI cards, based on the 3D Rage 2C chip. With these cards, I have had excellent results with the Mach64 server, but have found that I need to insert a "ChipID 0x4755", either manually into XF86Config, like so: Section "Device" Identifier "Primary Card" VendorName "Unknown" BoardName "ATI Mach64" ChipId 0x4755 or by using the detailed card setup in XF86Setup. xvidtune will allow you to adjust your monitor to eliminate black borders. Be very cautious with how you set your refresh rates in XF86Setup, and how you adjust things in xvidtune! Make sure you know the limits of your monitor, and don't exceed them, you can wreck a monitor with X. The other side is that you can get the full performance of your monitor. -- Gravity is a myth, the Earth sucks. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
