According to man trident:
ISA/VLBus 8900C, 8900D, 9000, 9200CXr, Cyber9320, 9400CXi, 9440AGi These cards have been ported but need furthur testing and may not work.
I saw that on the XFree86 doc page (didn't think to man trident :o although I did try man XFree), but by "ported" do they mean ported from 3.x or ported from the windows drivers?
Ported from 3.x
So you may need to downgrade -- what modeline are you using? For my Trident 8900C I use:
Modeline "640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525
That is one thing I found odd. There is no "modeline" just "modes" I have "modeline" in my other PCs (TNT, GForce2, ATI mobile), but not this one. For my "modes" I have "640x480" and Default depth of 8 (and I tried 16 too).
If you have a Section "Modes", stick that modeline in it like so: Section "Modes" Identifier "Modes[0]" Modeline "640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525 EndSection
It does have HorizSync and VertRefresh, which I have set as 31.5 and 50-60.
It is probably best to use a range here -- XFree is not going to be able to determine the exact clock so it might decide not to "risk" it when the clock is not close enough. In your Section "Monitor" try: HorizSync 31-32 VertRefresh 50-65

oh, that would not be good then :(

I tried a few different modelines but couldn't get it to work.

I tried many different values (one of which was exactly as above) but no luck there either. Well, thanks for the help. I guess I'll have to revert back to 3.x. I am surprised it and sax are still on the 8.1 cd's. Thanks SuSE :) -- JericAtSbcglobalDotNetwork 2:37am up 13 days, 18:26, 7 users, load average: 0.40, 0.17, 0.17
