I have just bought SuSE Enterprise Server 8 for my server. I have installed it successfully. I can surf in internet already from this new server. but the problem comes if I want to update the software with YOU. Because I get a prompt formular to fill the data which needed for an authorization process. The authorization form contents Registration Data : Code <<...>> and Password <<...>> . I don't have any problem for Code column because I can find the number easily on the SuSE Linux Maintenance Program sheet, it is : 44409596785672 . But I don't know which password I should use for this authorization process. I have activated this product number after making the login account for SuSE site. but I didn't received any e-mail which contents the password for the authorization process of YOU. I was so surprised after bought expensively SuSE Enterprise Server 8. I thought it is as new as SuSE 9.0 and as complete as SuSE 9.0, but this SuSE Enterprise Server 8 is exactly as old as SuSE 8.0. What a ridiculous product it is. Please tell me the solution. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - More reliable, more storage, less spam http://mail.yahoo.com

Can't help you with the password but I can't help feeling that buying something expensive without making sure what it is was perhaps a foolish move on your part and not something that you can blame SuSE for. FWIW, Enterprise versions (of most things) lag behind consumer versions because they have to be more reliable. first, The name of this product is SuSE Enterprise
Server 8 and it means....SuSE takes the responsibility
to provide the newest configuration in this package.
Man, this SuSE Enterprise Server 8 has only KDE 3.0
and a lot of old software even this is the newest
version of enterprise edition package.
second, I got this error message :
"
Sie haben einen fehlerhaften Registriercode angegeben!
"
if I tried to use my valid registration code (the
number is written on my "SuSE maintenance Program"
card) for this SuSE Enterprise Server 8 on this site :
http://support.suse.de/form .
I hope you see a lot of ridiculous things in this
package.
Each software or any product, if they use "Enterprise"
as the name of their product must be as complete as
possible because it is used by an enterprise and
because it cost very expensive, included : Microsoft,
Sun Solaris, CISCO etc.
Well, anyway I learned from this experience that not
all of the SuSE product satisfies their customers...
Thank you very much.

Enterprise uses the latest stable version of the software. The newer versions of the packages you mentioned haven't proven themselves as mission critical as of yet. You wouldn't want to run them on a Enterprise Server no matter what. I think you have the whole general concept of Enterprise confused. If you used any other enterprise software from other vendors you'll see the same thing. Except for microsoft software to some degree. You should not be running bleeding edge software on a server, you'll run into a boatload of problems, and regret your decision. chris
OK, I'll tell my networks in IT business to not buy
SuSE Enterprise Server because it is only a shit.
Thank you for your advise.
ps. a business men may say "foolish" to anybodyelse
except their customer. and Enterprise word has been
dirted by SuSE AG. And my networks must be more be
carefull about this word because it can be means "a
trap/lie" .

Hang on - the person to whom you were replying is only a member of this list. I also think you were a little foolish to buy something expensive without making sure you were getting what you thought, but I too am only a user. Take care to distinguish SuSE staff from SuSE users, and also official statements from casual advice. If you want SuSE's official opinion and real support (i.e. the support you paid for with the Enterprise package) you should use the channels provided by SuSE for that support. This is a user forum - very useful and often fast and authoritative, but *not* SuSE's official mouthpiece. Oh boy! Your obviously ignoring the replies as to what enterprise software really is. You got exactly what you paid for, but perhaps you didn't know what you wanted to begin with. Do you plan on running any enterprise applications on this server? If not, you wasted your money. If you do, however, plan to run some enterprise apps, you bought (in my opinion) the best enterprise linux operating system available today. If you don't think so, try another vendor, you'll find your in exactly the same boat. chris

I'd like to give an example: a local knowledge company, runs 12 SLES8 servers: 8 SAP machines 2 BIND machines 2 QMAIL machines .....You can FORGET support from SAP unless it's runing on SLES (or RedHat btw..). When your head is on the line and there's real business transactions counting on stuff to work....you understand. SLES is just as attactive and sexy as Solaris, HPUX or AIX.....I'm sure someone understands gets that joke? Yeah they suck for Quake.. jk -- Suse Linux 9.0 | 2.4.21-166-smp4G | KDE 3.1.4 | XFree86 v4.3.0.1

I think you've missed the point of "Enterprise". With this package, SuSE supplied the latest *stable* versions *at the time*. SLE8 has now been out for some time so will inevitable be "out of date", although this isn't such an issue for an Enterprise package, which will always place stability above cutting-edge features. Also, SLE8 comes with a far better support package than the consumer distro. But if you did your research before making major purchasing decisions, you'd know that. Sorry for the tone, but I can have little sympathy with someone being surprised by the content of something they've bought when the details are readily available - even proclaimed. Very wise of you to post a maintenance key to a public high volume mailing list for others to reuse (if you didn't already register it). As for the rest of your rant I'm sure you've read https://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/09/portal_faq.html , haven't you? The link is very prominent on the login page of the SUSE portal so it's quite hard to miss that. Philipp
