I am using 7.2 on a pentium 111 with 256meg ram and a Voodoo 3 2000. Out of ths boax and with agpart complied into the kernel I am getting a return from gears of around 86 fps. This seem rather slow, is there soimething I can do to improve it ? thanks Mike
Have you run 3Ddiag? If so, what's the output from it? Regards Anders On Saturday 30 June 2001 18:25, michael norman wrote:

Anders Yes just did that. It reurns no errors. Mike On Saturday 30 June 2001 17:30, Anders Johansson wrote:

None at all? It should say something along the lines of 'use switch2...' to tell you which script you should run to get 3d acceleration. Could you post the output? Anders On Saturday 30 June 2001 18:35, michael norman wrote:

hi ! is there any way to know where is the swap that the system is been using ? Also I have finished installing 7.2 at a RAID, but when I do a "df -h" I have a strage partition: "shmfs" ?? that a hell is that ? je je thanks bye --ed

swapon -s

This is the shared memory filesystem. "The shm filesystem cleans up the shared memory implementation, and helps in the provision of Posix shared memory segments." Don't ask me any more than that, because that's all I know. Hope that helps, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
It did say at the bottom that I could try to switch back to Mesa software OpenGL emulation. I applied that switch and gears ran very much faster. Trouble is all the apps I wanted to use (Tux_Aqfh, xracer, tuxracer etc) ran horribly slowly. Mike On Saturday 30 June 2001 17:54, Anders Johansson wrote:

I'm still using 4.0.3 after a bad experience with 4.1.0 and 7.1. One thing I did notice in the XFree86 4.1.0 'new features' section (see http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/RELNOTES2.html#2) was a new update called 'glxgears' - I'm *guessing* that this *might* give you hardware-accelerated frame rates. The final possibility is that something's funny about gears that causes it to report incorrect values for Voodoo 3 cards. However, I can report that q3arena runs absolutely fine on my box at 1024x768. The Voodoo 3 isn't the newest card around, yet for the little 3D stuff I do, the unusually low gears reading doesn't appear to have any real consequence. cheers, Gideon.

Hmmmmm..... I ran those "gears" and got the folllowing results: 537 frames in 5.003 seconds = 107.336 FPS 556 frames in 5.000 seconds = 111.200 FPS 526 frames in 5.007 seconds = 105.053 FPS Then I ran the 3Ddiag and executed the script in order to get 3D part of my Voodoo 3 3500 (p3 917 MHz and 256 MB Ram). Surprisingly, I got LOWER results... 476 frames in 5.001 seconds = 95.181 FPS 492 frames in 5.001 seconds = 98.380 FPS 396 frames in 5.012 seconds = 79.010 FPS ???? Now this confuses me big time :] Yours, Ziga
