Dear All, Does anyone know about this website offering linux systems: http://www.ibexpc.com/linuxsystems.html ? Has anyone delt with this business and is the support/warranties good? I am still looking for a linux computer for my stepson. I am torn between Dell and this site for the most part. He wants linux and windows installed dual boot and this site: http://www.ibexpc.com/linuxsystems.html does that. Seems to have fair priced computers. They offer either Redhat, Suse 9.1, or Mandrake 10 along with windows XP installed. This part is ideal for my stepson. I live too far away from him to install linux for him. Dell has a sale but I do not know if that is good for someone who wants both windows and linux. I do not think they install a dual boot system, either. Is Dell support really that great or would the support from this ibexpc site be just as good? Does the Dell all in one printer work in Linux? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. Thank you for the help. Sincerely, Marcia P.S. Thank you to the one who suggested that I have a system sent to me first so that I could get it running with Linux. I would love it but for several reasons it is not practical for me. I appreciate your creative idea. Thanks again.

I appreciate your creative idea. Thanks again. The only Dell I tried to install 9.1 on insisted on locking up. I don't remember the specific model but it was higher-end. Never did find out why, as the person for whom I was doing it decided it wasn't worth it since he already had a working 'Doze system on it. -- ..."Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio "If music be the food of love, why can't rabbits sing?"

Thank you for the great suggestions. I checked out Walmart and all I could find was Lindows , no os, windows, and the Java Sun Desktop which I never heard of until last night. Does anyone know about the Java Sun Desktop? I could not find Suse anywhere even with a search. Does anyone know how to find the Suse computers at Walmart? Thanks for all of the help. Sincerely, Marcia
For laptops I recommend eracks.com very reasonable. I have seen their
midrange notebook its very nice graphically and you pick your distro.

Didn't HP just start offering a laptop with SuSE pre installed? Jerry On Mon, 2004-09-06 at 02:27, Carl William Spitzer IV wrote:

My SuSE 9.1 firewall is running on a Dell system. Other than being a bit slow for running X apps, the only problem is I can't get the USB APCUPS connection working.
I would suggest HP as they do linux suse installs and I believe they will do a dual boot if you request it. I have five of their systems running dual boot all though they came with win and I installed linux. I also have some systems I put together myself from parts. That's just silly - if you're taking account of the guidelines to this extent, just do the Right Thing in the first place! Marcia -- I don't know of any major companies offering dual-boot systems; I'm sure MS would frown on any of its captives (er, "partners") doing that. If you want dual-boot that is already configured for you, you'll probably have to go to a custom shop such as ibexpc might be or some of the other Linux customizers/VARs. I've seen a few people offering you Linux-only computers source, but as I read your note that's not helpful, so I won't go there. I bet, though, that your stepson could install Linux himself on a Win system; I believe that SuSE, for instance, is quite friendly about resizing Win partitions and then away you go. [I, a command-line geek, do my resizes with a Knoppix CD, playing heavily with defragging and optimization on the Win side as I do, and then install my SuSE.] The only challenge you'll have, as far as I can see, is if Windows ever breaks, because the stock answer will be "wipe and reinstall", and the stock Win "recovery" disk from most manufacturers simply has a Symantec Ghost image of the entire hard drive in one big partition -- and so bye bye goes your Linux data as well. Back, though, to installations. It's pretty straightforward and I should think that anyone over the age of 10 who is patient enough to read the screens as they come up should be able to install. He might love the adventure and do quite well at it :-) For my money, FWIW, I would go with a basic desktop (eg e-Machines) or a Toshiba laptop (maybe, just maybe, an HP z-series); I'd skip any extended warranty on a desktop but would definitely get it for a laptop. Good luck and have fun :-) :-D -- David T-G davidtg@justpickone.org http://justpickone.org/davidtg/ Shpx gur Pbzzhavpngvbaf Qrprapl Npg!

Let me briefly add to this exchange that I have been extremely satisfied with systems that I've purchased from www.penguincomputing.com as well as from www.emperorlinux.com. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@CONSOLIDATEDLINT.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE
