Re: [SuSE Linux] Network Routing
Don't listen to em just yet. They're out to make money on something you can do for next to nothing and a little work! I have a similar setup using a cable modem(roadrunner) with a mixed linux/win95/win98 setup among 5 computers. I use an Asante friendly net 5 port hub to connect the 5 machines. I have 1 machine (linux box) with 2 network cards. This machine is the one connected to the cable modem on NIC #1. It gets a dynamic IP address from my ISP. NIC #2 connects to my home lan (fixed class C network addresses, 192.168.x.x)via the hub. The linux box runs IP Masq and firewall to make all my other boxes look as if only 1 box is accessing the Internet. The other machines (1 linux box and 3 windows machines) connect to it via their own NIC's on my local network. I just setup the windows machines to use a proxy server (the linux box at 192.168.1.1) and setup the appropriate ports. All 5 machines can access the net at the same time with no noticable decrease in speed. I got most of the information I needed from the How-to's on IP masq and firewall as well as the cable modem how-to. A search on dejanews.com gave me some insight as well. The important thing to do first is to get the local network working first between your 2 machines. Then start with the rest. you don't need a dedicated 3rd machine for what you are doing, but it is nice. I happened to have enough spare parts over and put an old PCI bus 486 together to have the cable modem attached to it. I used 6 pci NE2000 10/100 compatible NICS ($19.00 a piece mailorder) and the Asante friendly net 5 port hub ($39.00) and SuSE 5.3 to accomplish this. I figured why pay roadrunner more for another IP address when linux does it for a little bit of sweat. Hope this helps a bit. J-L jlboers@usa.net ---"Matthew D. Howell" <mathowel@nmsu.edu> wrote:
Hello
I have an AxDSL connection. The way this is set up is the company
network adaptor address (12-digit, hex) and binds that to a specific IP address. I want to connect a second computer, laptop, to the internet via this AxDSL connection. They have told me that I need to purchase an additional account for a monthly fee and they will provide a second IP. The laptop has a network card. How can I network both computers to the AxDSL using the one with an IP as a gateway. Is this possible? If so what kind of HUB is reccomended? Do I need one with an uplink? Both systems run Linux and Win98. SHould I use a third system as a dedicated gateway and connect the others to that, and then that to the AxDSL? Any help would be appreciated.
