GNOME 1.2.1 is making it impossible for me to log in. Whenever the machines boots it boots into a GNOME login interface which asks me for a login. The problem is I cannot type in any login username and therefore cannot login. To make matters worse I cannot break out of the login graphical interface. Ctrl-Alt-Bkspce doesn't have any effect. Try ctrl+alt+F1, which kills the Xserver, rather than restart it (which bkspace does) and if you want to boot into a non-X interface do at the lilo prompt: name_of_your_kernel 2 (usually, linux 2) Alvaro Novo SuSE 6.4 Kernel 2.2.16 KDE 2 - Beta 4 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't kill the X-server, you just get into another virtual console, the X-server is still active. If you do Ctrl-Alt-F1 and from there do startx then you get an error message that there already is an X-server active. Helgi Örn "Alvaro A. Novo" wrote:

Hi Alvaro, ctrl+alt+F1 just switches to virtual terminal 1 (tty01). It does not kill the X server. X server normally runs on tty07, so you can switch back by using ctrl+alt+F7. ctl-alt-backspace actually kills the X server. But if you are in runlevel 3 (XDM), init will respawn X and you will get a XDM (or KDM or GDM) login window. This actually gives the impression that ctl-alt-backspace restarts the X server. Hope this clears up the confusion. Nadeem "Alvaro A. Novo" wrote:

ctrl+alt+F1 does NOT kill Xserver, it switches you to virtual console 1, like F2-F6 keys will bring you to any of VC2-6. Your Xserver runs on virtual console 7. -Kastus

Do you make sure you got the mouse pointer precisely over the box you write in, while you write into it? Otherwise it doesn't work, which is really an annoying function, I've never understood why it is that way. Anyone who knows? If it still doesn't work then you can do: Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get into a text console, from there you can change /etc/inittab to be able to boot up in text-mode. Or just to make a reboot from there and at the boot prompt write #linux 2, then you'll end up in text mode. From there you should be able to start YaST, -> System administration -> Login configuration and change the Display manager. Good luck! Helgi Örn Carlos wrote:

You want to press ctrl+alt+F2 so you can go to another console. Log in as root and then change /etc/permissions you need to make sure the gdm line looks like this. /var/lib/gdm gdm.gdm 750 For some reason when it installs itself it has gdm.shadow as the default and this causes problems. Once you change this run SuSEconfig to update everything. Kill gdm with 'killall gdm' and next time you reboot or run init 3 it should work fine. * Carlos (canr@mail.com) [000907 06:40]: -->GNOME 1.2.1 is making it impossible for me to log in. -->Whenever the machines boots it boots into a GNOME login interface which asks me for a login. -->The problem is I cannot type in any login username and therefore cannot login. Try Ctrl-Alt-BkSp-Del
