[opensuse] mouse scroll wheel works with man - cool!
On another mailing lists I just read that you can move through a man page via your mouse scroll wheel. It works for me. (11.3 w/usb Dell scroll wheel mouse). Interesting feature as I sometimes like to get a specific part of a man page on the screen. I suppose you already know that you can pipe a man page to less and scroll in both directions with up/down keys: man fstab | less frinstance. (Since I use Kensington trackballs, I don't have a scroll wheel, and don't miss it. I wish it had a middle button, however. . . .) (Yes, I know you can get a Kensington ball with a "scroll ring" --for $10 extra--and I don't miss it!) --doug -- Blessed are the peacemakers...for they shall be shot at from both sides. --A.M. No, can't say that I did. When using less via man I use the space bar - advance one page return key - advance one line '/' - search q - quit Up arrow and the mouse scroll are both things I should have known last century it seems, but I missed them somehow. Any other little tidbits I should know? Thanks Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Piping through less should be unnecessary unless the pager isn't set to use less (I don't recall if I changed that on my systems or if it was the default, though). According to the man man page, though, less -s is the default pager used. Nothing new. I use that at least since SuSE 6.2 in 1999. It's a question of whether the xterm grabs the 'page up/down' keys or if it passes them to the pager, i.e. usually "less". I did notice that 11.2 is configured, that PgUp/Dn scrolls the xterm buffer, and does not pass the keys on to the app. Here, I can use shift to scroll the xterm's output (like the Linux tty). -dnh -- In the old days, it was very simple: "You shoot us, we shoot you." Then, after World War II, we had the IRA in the 80ies, it was: "They blow us up, and we shoot back."
