[opensuse] Run Dual-boot XP simultaneously?
Windows on my wife's Dell 4700C finally imploded. Since the opportunity to "fix" it was presented, I added dual-booting Suse 10.2 after reinstalling XP. It occurs to me now with a complete XP install on its own partition separate from linux, shouldn't it somehow be possible to run both at the same time? So, is there a way to run Windows XP already installed on its own partition from within SuSE? Or would I be required to reinstall Windows from within some kind of emulation or virtualization framework? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

VMWare workstation can do this, but it is payed product. I'm not sure if you can do this with the free VMPlayer. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

By "do this" I mean it can create a virtual machine, which uses a physical partition, not a virtual hard drive. I.e. you can run your preinstalled XP.

Yes. The VMware products can use either virtual drives (files in the host OS that hold the contents of virtual drives as seen in the guest OS) or physical drives (or partitions) that are accessed directly by the guest OS. At least VMware Workstation (not free of charge) can do this. I haven't checked to see if VMware Server (the zero-cost product) can do so as well.

and be aware than running XP through vmware _and_ sometime directly is quite dangerous (In fact I didn't try it for XP but for windows 98 time ago, the config files where mixed) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://gourmandises.orangeblog.fr/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Eh? Dangerous in what way? Do you mean running a given installation on "bare hardware" sometimes and under VMware at others? Assuming you install enough hardware drivers (disks and video would need two each, probably), the only problem I can think of is the fact that Windows sees different hardware configurations and under XP and later this can trigger Windows Activation to decide that the installation has moved to a new machine in violation the license.

Actually, what is described on vmware site, is that you need to run XP natively, and create a new hardware profile, before you try to run it in vmware workstation. I have 2 hardware profiles, and one is with the "real" hardware to run it natively, and the other one is with the emulated hardware from vmware. That way, when you boot XP, you choose the right profile. This is hardly a breakage of the license, as XP is suited to work on laptop with docking station (thats why the hw profiles), and basically what happen with vmware - you just provide different video card, etc. (kind of :) ( -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I understand from others that Parallels (pay product) can do this quite well on a Mac. Apparently you can run the same install both in OSX virtualized in Parallels, and then booting directly to the same install in bootcamp. Parallels keeps this all straight. Dont' know about Linux. it is possible with vmware. at least with vmware workstation. i do it this way since 2001. -- einen schönen Tag noch, & bitte kein TOFU (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOFU) DI Rainer Klier Abteilung IT - Entwicklung ECOLOG Logistiksysteme GmbH Bauernstraße 11, A-4600 Wels Tel. ++43/7242/66200 Fax ++43/7242/66200-200 mailto:kra@ecolog.at http://www.ecolog.at -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not as such, since doing so would require a VMware image that included Windows. Clearly, that would be a license violation. However, there is the free (only free of charge) VMware Server product that will run Windows (and many other operating systems) as guests within a Linux host (and vice versa, for what it's worth).

As it's Father's Day I (mostly) get to do what I want, so one of today's items was to catch up on my reading. As luck would have it the July 2007 SYSADMIN Magazine has a special insert on Virtualization and July 2007 Linux Magazine has an article on VMware that are exactly what I was looking for. Wouldn't have otherwise found these until August or perhaps October. It should work exactly as I described previously and I won't need to reinstall WIndows. I have VMware Server installed per the article and a key registered, and then (re)discovered I did not originally finish installing everything for suse 10.2, so there are missing dependencies. That figures, since I lent all of the 10.2 discs to a friend, so it could be next Father's Day when I get the time to finish it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you add the oss and non-oss directories as yast sources, you won't need to have the cd/dvds. You can get the dependencies via online repo. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.2 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
