Hi, All, Running 8.0 and KDE 3.0 and Kmail all of a sudden began to freeze when It checks mail. Nothing I can do - I take a look in KDE System Guard and it shows me that it's running and sleeping. If I kill it and restart Kmail, it runs perfectly well until I check mail, at which point it freezes again. I have tried letting it sit for about ten minutes thinking that perhaps it's some huge file somewhere, but no luck. It's checking locally, too, with fetchmail getting the mail and delivering it to the user mail box. I haven't changed anything with the configuration of anything on the box, which has been running flawlessly for months. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance, nick
I've isolated it to the checking of the local mailbox. I had it set up to check some POP accounts, but Fetchmail fetched mail, gave it to Spastic, which filtered Spam using Spastic / Procmail, then delivered to /home/nick/Mail/mbox Kmail checked Local mail by going to mbox and then putting what is in there into Kmail mail folders using its internal filters. the mbox file has a few short messages in it; nothing with attachments, all text only. /var/log/fetchmail and /var/log/messages don't show anything interesting. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks, nick At 09:34 AM 3/20/2003 +0100, I wrote:

Do you have any "filter actions" that include piping through external programs? If so, I'd look to that as a possible culprit (kmail doesn't thread external action/filters -- if what kmails hands a message off to doesn't come back, kmail will be "stalled"...) that said, I also see in my inbox an inordinately large piece of spam -- subject line is "kick ass, bro!" -- 109k in size, seems to have inline images included [claims to be a back-door entrance to an "age verification" page, thus inferring free access to nekkid pictures, even if you are underage...] if you got that "spam" [and it somehow got past your pre-filtering stage] then perhaps kmail is choking on that... - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+eZkfV/YHUqq2SwsRAlfDAKCV21qynh5DHo8vO8Z4NHH8Ejlq9wCgmZKF hPtejXScngdoEuTu0cOdbXg= =dvjC -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Thanks for the reply, and good idea. I had tried deleting all the files in mbox. When the mbox file was empty, everything was fine. As soon as a piece of mail was in there again, though, Kmail froze up like an ice cube. ?

Could it be that the Mbox format is the reason? Have you tried if that also happens if the format is maildir. HTH -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. (where the hell is that?). My holy cow is a penguin.

I turned "lockfile" to "none" (from procmail lock file) and the locking stopped. However this is dangerous. So it seems that the lockfile is the problem. Does this ring any bells? Any ideas as to why it would begin causing a problem like this out of the blue? Thanks, nick

Have you considered to use Kshowmail? It downloads the headers and you can remove all the Spam etc ,on the server. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. (where the hell is that?). My holy cow is a penguin.
