My experience is that sometimes the translation while syntatically correct isn't the way that a thought would be expressed in a 2nd language. Being an American working in Germany for a German company I run into this everyday. It is one of the reasons that some global companies have trouble with their internal communications. While my German is not good enough to do the translations, I have done several proofreading jobs on translated documents for our company and a joint venture marketplace. There have always been changes that in my opinion would have caused misunderstandings if not corrected. (ok, I'm biased and my collegues would probably say the same about my German!) I stopped using the manuals back at release 7.0 not because of the translation but just didn't need them. As Linux moves more into the mainstream it is very important to have clear, easy to understand manuals for the "non-techies" to use. For the techies that don't use the manuals it would be interesting to be able to just buy an upgrade version with just the CD wallet shrinkwrapped. Would save trees even if was at the same price as the standard Upgrade. If SuSE is interested in external proofreaders then I would be happy to volunteer time to this important task.
