Hello I am trying to update, via FTP, from 7.1 to 8.0. I use the boot CD, and am able to download all the packages. However, when the system gets past the red warning screen, it reports an error and then crashes. On restarting the system, it welcome screen is still that for SuSE 7.1. Can anyone help? Thanks, John.

I was having the same thing when updating from 7.2 to 8.0 with ftp and boot floppy. The system was still working but was a 7.2 system. The problem was at Yast was thonking at the update was done. Nothing was working with Yast, nor the update, not the normal reinstall of the 7.2 packages. At the end i have done a fast backup of my home directory, a new install process with Suse 8.0, ftp and the same floppy and all was OK. The new install is better as the update process in that way at all that is done is on the harddisk. In case of problem, you will restart from where you was after the few welcome screens. It seam to be much more stabil and effective too. I can think also at with a new install, you will get only the bugs of the new version, not the cumulative bugs of the 2 versions. Good luck Dominique John Janmaat wrote:

Thanks, I am trying to avoid a new install, as I foolishly accepted Yast's partition suggestions the first time around, and do not have a separate /home partition. John. Dominique Michel wrote:

I suggest you look at some partitioning tools. SuSE8.0 has a partition resizer which I have not used. I have used Partition Magic extensively including changing partitions. In general, take the following steps: 1. plan your partition changes and update /etc/fstab. 2. (assuming Partition Magic or another partitioner, such as Bootit): Resize existing partions. Create new partitons. 3a. If you did not change the location of the /boot and / partitions, then you should be able to boot directly. 3b. If you are unable to boot directly, then boot from a rescue disk or from your SuSE DVD or CD-ROM. There are a few different methods you can use, but try the rescue systme first. Another technique is to start an installation selecting no packages. At some point, there will be a couple of virtual terminals available. With the VT, you can mount your hard drive partitions and edit /etc/fstab, or chroot to the mounted root directory and run LILO. I generally prefer booting the installed system to using chroot, but both work. On 29 Jul 2002 at 11:10, John Janmaat wrote:
