Hi All Every Forum and mailing list gets the same question from potential Linux users every now and again "Which one should I use?" they generally get inundated with the members personal choice rather than the one suited to them. Some of you may have seen this before but there is a site that hosts a test which, based on your answers, will give you the Linux Distributions that are best suited to you I've been given permission to link to it check it out at my site under the heading Linux Chooser http://cannon-linux.co.uk/my-linux-stuff.html?Itemid=27 -- Regards Dick Turpin -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's not too bad. A few observations: It would be nice to be able to back up and change some of your answers. As is typical with this sort of approach, if you answers don't fit the options offered (e.g., I run a workstation that also functions as a server), you may not get optimum recommendations. I liked the offer to teach me about alternate package management schemes. I'm aware of the Debian system, of course, but know nothing about it. Now I have a Web page open that will give me some basic information about it. Anyway, from my first pass through the advisor, I was recommended these three distributions: - Debian - OpenSuSE (sic) - Mandriva

I was quite impressed! When I took the test, the program indicated that Gentoo would be the best distribution for me. That's pretty good since I use Gentoo at home and at work, almost exclusively. I am using Suse for the first time since it is specified by one of our vendors. In the past, I've used RedHat, Slackware, Mandrake, Knoppix, Yellow Dog, and Caldera. The other neat thing was that the program indicated that my second choice would be Slackware, which is the first distro that I ever used! I was intrigued by the fact that the program also indicated why it thought a given distro would be less than optimum for me. In the case of Gentoo, it indicated the lack of application library would make it less than optimum. However, I have to take issue with the lack of applications. Anyway, here is a single point sample that indicates that your program works well. Mike Diehl. On Tuesday 24 April 2007 09:47, Randall R Schulz wrote:

There are only 2 distros, that I really love, and consider for serious use: openSUSE and Mandriva Linux. I have tried ArchLinux, Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat, Fedora, Linspire and dozens of others... while each Linux has it's own strong points, only SUSE and Mandriva are the ones the very close to the "best" of my of ideals, because both are: 1) general-purpose, (more desktop oriented, but server use possible) 2) have KDE well supported 3) have large number of packages (due to rule 1) 4) have graphical control center (Yast and Mandriva Control Center) 5) well documented 6) have large community of users The most popular distro (Ubuntu) definetely lacks (#4) something like Yast or MCC, before I can consider it. For now, I stay in the SUSE land, because SUSE is less buggy and more polished than Mandriva, but I can switch if needed - that is: I stay open-minded. -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What's the best distro for me or my friends, even knowing our preferences, is hard to say. For us it depends mostly on what hardware will the distro be used, is the target system a server, a workstation or a laptop and in what environment will the system occur. For servers we're using either debian stable or sles, for workstation opensuse, ubuntu or centos, for laptops opensuse or ubuntu. Nevertheless I set up also few clients with a customized gentoo, but it took a hell of my time to build it. The result however I like very much. I think that for completely beginners an opensuse, a ubuntu or a centos will the distro most easy to set up and very much convenient in use. For those who already are tainted by linux....Well you know better than me what you like and what ain't. Last but not least. Yast2 IMO is definitely a core advantage of opensuse. However in time and with slightly growing experience I found it more annoying than helpful and such prefer now to edit scripts myself. To be honest I wanted something quick, it was the first picture I came across that could be edited easily with my appalling graphics design skills I hate the sites logo as well which was another botch job on my part. I tried the selector -- and the first distribution named was a Gnome system, showing that the selection does not allow for definitely not wanting KDE or Gnome; I do not want a desktop interface at all (no icons, no clicking) but there was no way to indicate that as far as I could tell. ==John ffitch -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just re-took the test again and see what you mean however I see this tool more for Linux novices than hardcore like yourself. To be honest most people with just a little understanding of Linux could probably decide which distro is best for them without using the 'Chooser' in fact my thoughts are the reverse of yours I'd take out the desktop choice, and give a GUI environment in the choice by default even though there is an explanation of the difference and what Gnome and KDE is somebody new to Linux may see that choice as yet another hurdle and fail to jump plus 99.9% of new users wouldn't want text mode at first anyway. But I will pass on your comments. -- Regards Peter cannon "There is every excuse for not knowing There is no excuse for not asking" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
