[opensuse] Zypper, working with the kernel of the day?
Would like to play with the kernel of the day. Could that be done with zypper. How should I start the new repository? zypper ar with the URL of the kernel of the day seems to request more information. -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 11.3 (i586) Kernel: 2.6.35.1-1-default LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.5.00 (KDE 4.5.0) 15:53pm up 2:43, 2 users, load average: 2.54, 1.72, 1.10 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you seen this page? http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Kernel_of_the_day I think one piece of information is missing there: enable multiple versions of the kernel in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf (there is a comment in zypp.conf explaining it). Regards,
Read it and then lost direction after I started to read http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Zypper_usage#Listing_defined_repositories Thanks for bringing me on the way. Have looked line by line through zypp.conf and assume you meant multiversion=provides:multiversion(kernel) That was a piece of info I was looking for. One open question: do I still need "zypper mr -p 100 KOTD" or could I give KOTD a higher priority? -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 11.3 (i586) Kernel: 2.6.35.1-1-default LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.5.00 (KDE 4.5.0) 18:06pm up 4:56, 3 users, load average: 0.78, 0.81, 0.89 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, just did not remember exactly how it looks (and was not near my Linux computer).

I would say it is up to you. I tried this procedure to install 2.6.35 kernel together with 2.6.34 and I do not want Yast to automatically lupdate 2.6.35 kernel. So I set priority to 100 in the hope I'll not forget to check for newer versions of 2.6.35 myself. If you prefer letting zypper/yast to update your KOTD, give it higher priority. The referenced wiki page recommends simply: sudo rpm -i --force http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/master/i586/kernel-default.rpm to do a one time kernel install and not kill your existing kernel / grub setup. see http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Kernel_of_the_day I just tested it and it worked great. I have my old kernel, the new KOTD. both in the grub menu. Does it not work for you? If it fails, maybe you should file a bug. Or do you find the wiki page confusing. Maybe the "testing" section needs to be moved above the "following"section. Greg Works fine for me too. Have both kernels in grub and are just happy. Think that the two kernel update should be intergrated in the instructions. Should be the first choice. -- Linux User 183145 using LXDE on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 11.3 (i586) Kernel: 2.6.35.1-1-default LXDE WM & KDE Development Platform: 4.5.00 (KDE 4.5.0) 09:12am up 20:02, 2 users, load average: 0.90, 0.67, 0.71 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
