[opensuse] logdigest not compressing /var/log/messages
Something changed after 1 August 12 and /var/log/messages while still being rotated is *not* being compressed: ls -la /var/log/message* |tail -5 -rw-r----- 1 root root 911484 Jun 19 00:15 /var/log/messages-20120619.xz -rw-r----- 1 root root 230224 Jul 9 00:15 /var/log/messages-20120709.xz -rw-r----- 1 root root 242668 Aug 1 00:15 /var/log/messages-20120801.xz -rw-r----- 1 root root 4286610 Aug 20 00:15 /var/log/messages-20120820 -rw-r----- 1 root root 4353942 Sep 7 00:02 /var/log/messages-20120907 all other rotated files after 1 Aug are xz compressed. last change to /etc/logrotate.d/syslog -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1390 Jul 16 12:15 /etc/logrotate.d/syslog and syslog contains: /var/log/warn /var/log/messages /var/log/allmessages \| /var/log/localmessages /var/log/firewall /var/log/acpid |\ /var/log/NetworkManager { compress dateext maxage 365 rotate 99 missingok notifempty size +4096k create 640 root root sharedscripts postrotate /etc/init.d/syslog reload /> /dev/null endscript } *is* this a result of systemd-journal* writing to or controlling /var/log/messages man systemd-journalctl.conf cites: Compress= Takes a boolean value. If enabled (the default) data objects that shall be stored in the journal and are larger than a certain threshold are compressed with the XZ compression algorithm before they are written to the file system. and.. /etc/systemd/systemd-journald.conf contains: [Journal] #Compress=yes and I do have /var/log/joural/.... but the files have not reached a rotate/compress level. *What* is at play that I do not see? ?? bug report (and, if so, *what*) ?? -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No, the journal does read, write or otherwise involves itself with /var/log/messages or any other log file for the matter. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Just for the record, it only operates either on its volatile logs in /run or the permanent ones in /var/log/journal, file have extension ".journal" . "the compress level" in the journal is about the size of an individual entry, compression is done line-by-line and not per file. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
