[SLE] AMD K6/2 500 mhz & SOYO Motherboard
Hi SuSErs :) ~ am about to try an AMD K6/2 ~ my local retailer tries to sell me a SOYO 5EHM MoBo I have had a look at the SuSE Hardware Database, but cannot see this Soyo Model . . . any views, please, about SOYO Motherboards in general, and SOYO 5EHM MoBo in particular ? thanks :) -- ____________ sent on Linux ____________ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Dont know a thing about the soyo but if it has built in graphics and/ or built in sound stay away from it. Too meny unsuported built in sound chips and some are difficult to disable if they can be dissavbled. I like Asus and have the p5a and with an amd 400 and another with the 450. They go from 85 to 105 for the motherboard , plus chip and memeory. At 04:28 PM 5/8/2000 +0000, tabanna wrote:

Ditto on the ASUS P5A and a AMD K6-2 400, works excellent.

I have had my K6-III 400 on one of these model motherboards since last June and I have had no problems. It's still humming along quite nicely...and SuSE works very well with it. I am currently running 6.4 on it and I see no issues. my 0.02

I have a couple of friends locally here who have a sayo mb but not sure of the model they have. They are only running windows but it seems to be a nice mb they both have been running them for over a year. I prefer asus mb myself. I have two of them at home with one k6-2 350 an one 450 both run with linux with no trouble. jack At 04:28 PM 5/8/00 +0000, tabanna wrote:

<snip> Avoid, avoid, avoid..... I had a Soyo MB & had real hassles getting the dam thing going right. So I thought, why not contact Soyo for some help? They ignored my requests for help. Hence, I am returning the favour now..... I have an FIC 503+ & it is a dam fine piece of work! They have just released a BIOS update, so I can drop a AMD K6-2-550 into it. Yum. Check out these sites for MB info; http://www.sharkyextreme.com/ http://sysdoc.pair.com/ http://www.super7.net/main.htm Hope that helps & *BFN* Greek Geek :-) "Quite frankly, I don't like you humans. Hi, I have the exact same configuration and have had no problems with it. Bad points... No UDMA66 and only 1Mb Cache, and support from Soyo has stopped for this board (i.e. no more BIOS updates). The only concern I have with it is the positioning of the CPU socket. Why mobo manufacturers keep sticking it down behind the PCI slots is beyond me. If you have any fairly long cards then it makes it difficult to get things to fit, never mind the possibility of noise being radiated onto graphics cards etc... Good points.. just one I can think of, it does take power from an ATX or AT power supply. This allowed me to step up to a 300W ATX PSU ready for an Athlon (or at least an ATX mobo) sometime later on. Hope thats of help. If possible I would stay away from the AT board, and try and move to an ATX. If I remember rightly Soyo have an ATX version of the board. If I had my choice again I would probably go for the Tyan Trinity S1598-C2 mobo, which has UDMA66 and 2Mb Cache. RikD tabanna wrote:

I don't know about the 5EHM, but the 5EH5 seems to be a logically good motherboard. It does have a physical layout issue that you need to be aware of, though. The processor is behind the card slots. As a result, several of the slots can't take long cards - and by "long" I mean longer than the ISA card socket. There is only one PCI slot that doesn't have this restriction. (Also two ISA slots and the AGP slot, but those won't help you if you have two long PCI cards.) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
