Hi, I am giving suse 5.3 a try. I have used redhat, caldera, and debian and I have never had as much of a hard time setting up ppp as i am having with suse. I am trying to use kppp and everytime i connect it will not get past my ISP saying "no carrier". I have not done anything different than in the other distro's I have set up. I cannot get suse's pppconfig to work either. Any Idea's. And now, imo, it's time to try WvDial. Go to: <A HREF="http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/"><A HREF="http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/</A">http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/</A</A>> and DL the source (SRC) code file. Follow the instructions in Install, and you'll be all set. WvDial virtually automates your entire ppp-dialup process from identifying the modem to setting an optimized init string. All you need to do is enter 3 pieces of information: you ISP's phone number; your username; and password. And another option is to try X-ISP, which automates dialup quite nice also. This is a GUI app using XFORMS. Head to <A HREF="http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/"><A HREF="http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/</A">http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/</A</A>> & download the latest, edit the makefile as needed. Hi Rick This is a FAQ ;-) you have a few options but I cant help you with kppp 1) and probably most recommended here is to use WvDial see <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/WvDial.htm"><A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/WvDial.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/WvDial.htm</A</A>> youll first need to start yast and install gpp which is a C++ compiler its in the development section of packages. Then get the source for WvDial and simply follow the read me 2) use the command /etc/suseppp/scripts/ppp-up generic however using this youll posibly need to adjust your /etc/suseppp/generic.options file something like this /dev/modem change to /dev/ttyS? where ? is the # of the modem /etc/suseppp/generic.options /dev/ttyS0 19200 crtscts lock name "my username" noipdefault defaultroute debug ================================= also check and possibly try this script /etc/suseppp/generic.chat TIMEOUT 60 ABORT "NO CARRIER" ABORT BUSY ABORT "NO DIALTONE" ABORT ERROR "" +++\dATZ OK ATDTyourispsphone# CONNECT ------------------------------------------------------ /etc/ppp/pap-secrets # client server secret ip address yourusername * yourpassword ----------------------------------------------------- that should get you going rob Bookmarks <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm"><A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A</A>> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

I had a similari problem for a awhile. It was a result of my modem being defined
incorrectly. Did you also check your resolv.conf file? Richard N. Hinton

Rick; Go back to your Redhat manual; at least it explains what it is your trying to accomplish; unlike suse. The guys @ SuSE tried to help promote a bunch of German ISP's, so they came up with scripts and that damned SuSEppp. Talk about making a simple thing complicated! You still only need slip and ppp support in the kernel, diald, pppd, chat and connect. The guys at SUSE took so much grief about Suseppp and all of that nonsense that they have bailed out to WvDial as a means of establishing a ppp connection. It still works the same, you just have to wade through SUSE's B.S. Joe Rick Knebel wrote:

Before knocking our friends at SuSE,(or Red Hat), this is a German distribution first. Excellent engineering and work being done in this version and plenty of help. wvdial and XISP are enough for the US users, and non-European users. Why do so many people have such a problem with suseppp? OK, its not exactly plug and play owing to the differences between ISPs, but it's easy enough to find out what you need to change in the chat script by dialling in manually with a modem program like minicom. That's how I did it. Here's a useful tip for those who are having problems; the default chat script isn't very informative about progress during connection and it's not very readable. As an alternative, you can adapt the shell script in /usr/lib/diald/connect to your ISP's login protocols quite easily as it is quite transparent about how it goes about making a conection. Rename the customised shell script to /etc/suseppp/scripts/generic.connect, then replace the pppd invocation in ppp-up with the following: /usr/sbin/pppd \ connect "/etc/suseppp/scripts/$1.connect < /dev/modem > /dev/modem" \ file /etc/suseppp/$1.options And that's all; just run /etc/suseppp/scripts/ppp-up to bring up the line. Iiwish it was as easy as you say.... I've been able to get kpp working (with some trouble) and wvdial (with somewhat less trouble) and for the moment, both seem to be working 100% . But there is just no way I can get chat to talk to my modem.... I've just spent an entire day fiddling around, reading the howto's and the SDB. But whatever I try, when I send "ATZ" to my modem, BANG, nothing happens... On Mon, 28 Dec 1998, you wrote:
