[SLE] setting up remote X Windows
I have a number of questions about remote X Windows. I would like to use on of my Linux box's as a X server for both NT and Linux. What do I need to do to setup the X server for remote use? How do I access the X Server from another Linux box? Can I use ssh to encrypt the connection when I go over the Internet? i would suggest not doing this. from my experience with X, i have noticed that there is a big security hole in the /tmp folder where any user that would login can get write permissions to ANY directory, which can ultimately lead to root compromise. ryan -~->-----Original Message----- -~->From: root@one.net [mailto:root@one.net]On Behalf Of Sam Carleton -~->Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2000 8:03 PM -~->To: SuSE Mailing List -~->Subject: [SLE] setting up remote X Windows -~-> -~-> -~->I have a number of questions about remote X Windows. -~-> -~->I would like to use on of my Linux box's as a X server for both NT and -~->Linux. The Great Ryan, I wound understand your consern, but... The box is a firewall so I am not worried about folks hacking in from the outside. I am the only one in my household that will be using the box as a X Server, the wife is cool, I don't think the 3 or 5 years boys are a threat, and the 11 year old young lady could not care less about computers:) I don't think security is going to be a problem:) I would still like to know HOW to setup a box as a X server... A quick work on who is the server. An X11 server is the program that does the display: +------------+ +------------+ | X11 Server | +------------+| | NT | +------------+|+ +------------+<----->+-------------+|+ | X11 Clients |+ +------------+<----->+-------------+ | X11 Server | | Linux | +------------+ Servers do the work, clients decide what has to be done regardless of the system. AFAIK you never have to do anything to enable access to you X11 server to allow access over TCP/IP, it depends on the server though.
How do I access the X Server from another Linux box?
You need to set the DISPLAY variable on the client machines to point out the X11 server. Usually this is <machine address>:0 but it may vary. You can have a number of X11 servers on the same machine, they begin with :0 and go upwards, :0 corresponds with a port number of 6000 etc. Every display can have a number of screens and these also begin with 0 in which case you use :<display>.<screen>, you probably don't need to worry about that. The next problem is access control, if you use xauth (as everybody should) then you need to have the same values for xauth on every machine, in general if you do an xauth list <display name> on your X11 server machine then you can do xauth add <output from xauth list> on the client machines. If you share you home directory across machines then you don't need to do that.
Can I use ssh to encrypt the connection when I go over the Internet?
h can do X11 port forwarding, this means that when you slogin from your X11 server to one of the client machines sshd will set the DISPLAY variable and do an xauth add. /Michael -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hi all, for one of my customers i'm investigating the possibility of upsizing (as M$ calls it) some msAccess applications to SQL-server. At home I have one huge Linuxbox, a linux firewall and a couple of Win!@*# machines. (As most of my work is done in MS-products, oh well...) Now the question: Could I somehow install SQL server onto the Linux file-server and let it think it is installed on a Win* server. Thus creating an environment similar to my customers'. With Samba of course this is possible, but then SQL-server presumes that it is installed locally, on an linked networkdrive. Maybe someone has some experience with this. I don't want to install WinNT on the Linuxbox as well, nor on any other computer, as they are functioning exactly like I (think I) want to. The final solution would be another server with WinNT on it, but that would be too much. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
