Now this error is really strange since index=0 tells ALSA which sound slot to use for the card. Try: (1) taking out index=0 to let ALSA do it automatically, (2) rerun depmod -a, (3) restart ALSA and see if it makes a difference. No, the parameter is called snd_index

They dropped the snd_ in module options in 0.9rc4. In fact that is what the modules-options script in the utils/ directory of the source does- remove the snd_. He is trying to set up ALSA 0.9.2. In addition, to the problems I've mentioned, the ALSACONF always gives me a list of two cards to choose from. It thinks I have two ENS1371 cards installed when in fact I have only one... I think this might be part of the problem. What can I do to remove any trace of past soundcard installations and start over? -Thanks- PS: I was did remove the index=0 argument from the modules.conf file and it had no effect.

The snd-ens1371 you're trying to load isn't the alsa you compiled, it is the OSS module you copied manually. You can start by deleting the module you copied manually. Then run "depmod -a". Then "rmmod snd-ens1371" "rmmod "ac97_codec" and "rmmod "snd". Then try again
Ok that fixed the problem! It appears to have worked. I ran the alsaconf had it gave output that appeared to indicate it was playing a file at 16bit etc with no error messages. I don't know for sure if the sound worked however since I am doing this via SSh from work. Thanks to ALL WHO HELPED! -Jim-
