Following the upgrade from SuSE 8.1 to 8.2 all of my TrueType fonts seem to be appearing twice the size and very heavy. I can only assume this is down to a different screen dpi setting (the resolution is the same at 1600x1200), but have not yet found a way to change it. I have been write through the FDU howto, but no improvement. Only the Adobe fonts look any good. There doesn't seem to be anyone with similar problems which is worrying, as I have installed 8.2 on 2 separate PCs with the same results. This seems to happen in all applications. I am not sure if it is relevant or related but the spacing between menus in OpenOffice.org seems greater than it used to be. Thanks for any ideas.... Mike.

I have the same problem when using the nvidia driver with 3D enabled. -- _ _ __ _____ _____ ___| |_ | '__| / __\ \ /\ / / _ \/ _ \ __| -o) | | _ \__ \\ V V / __/ __/ |_ /\\ |_|(_) |___/ \_/\_/ \___|\___|\__|_\_v rsweet@garagenetworks.net "there's no love in fear."
Glad to know that it isn't just me! I tried disabling 3D and it didn't make any difference. Also I installed 8.2 on my work machine which has an Intel video card and that has the same problem. Maybe it is just my poor memory, but I am sure that the fonts were much better under 8.1.

What about starting X with different dpi (75, 96, or 100). Does it make any differences? -- -- Verdi March --
Sorry, I haven't been following the thread but could fontconfig help? http://fontconfig.org/fontconfig-user.html The window manager fonts in my 8.2 installation were heavy and I was not given the option to choose any of the MS fonts that were available to KDE apps. Fontconfig did the trick. Barbara
I don't know much about fonts, but I know that the same fonts (andale, verdana) when server from a SuSe.8.0.Pro X font server look excellent. When they are taken from local files they are just plain ugly. -Stathis. Barbara Baker wrote:

Nope. I have the same problem, and I'm using 8.1 :( Guess I'll try fontconfig tomorrow and see what happens ;) - -- Benjamín Ubach Nieto Reality is acceptable... | spamfree at tutopia.com if practiced with moderation... | ICQ: 66021618 Linux Registered User: 310305 | MSN: exmetallifan at hotmail.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+zFhHn/37kYXielsRAh7sAJ974DWxy6naMEcuFYC06qOFxSVE6QCfbwrK +iXArvgmt8D56Rcuu5ubrzY= =rPk7 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I had a similar problem. After installing SuSE 8.2 all my fonts were much smaller than on 8.1. It seems, KDE 3.1 uses the DisplaySize in Section "Monitor" in /etc/X11/XF86Config to set the dpi. DisplaySize width height (in millimeters) I set the values to the real display size and the problem was gone. In my case: Section "Monitor" ... DisplaySize 284 213 ... Walter
