[SLE] install winnt or 98 after linux?
ok ... i left 4GB of free space at the end of my disk after installing linux. i have three primary partitions and free space at the end: /dev/hda1 /boot /dev/hda2 swap /dev/hda3 / free space i run the NT installer and NT formats an NTFS filesystem as C: on the free space, and copies a bunch of system files there. then it asks me to reboot the system with no diskettes or the cdrom in. it says setup will continue when the system is restarted. so i booted linux again and configured /etc/lilo.conf to be: boot=/dev/hda #compact # faster, but won't work on all systems. linear vga=normal read-only prompt timeout=100 # End LILO global Section image = /boot/vmlinuz_2.2.17 root = /dev/hda3 label = 2.2.17 image = /boot/vmlinuz root = /dev/hda3 label = linux other = /dev/hda4 label = dos table = /dev/hda and i reran lilo when i try to boot dos at the lilo prompt, it says its booting dos and hangs there. is there a procedure around for installing winnt or win98 after installing linux? it can't be that hard .... -- michael -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
In my experience it is better to install win98 /NT/2000 first, by the way for NT4 the boot partition should be within the first 1024 cylinder or possibly first 4GBytes of the disc. This is also probably true for other versions of Windows. I have found boot magic to be the best way of dual-booting Linux / Windoze. David

Hi Michael, I think this is due to NT wanting the boot record. I did the setup that you intended, but with an configured NT on a seperate disk (installed NT on hda, that I turned into slave to become hdb, linux then on hda) This way, it kept its boot sector. I think your setup jumps nowhere. I have a description on how to use the NT bootloader to boot into linux, but this is a bit tricky since you use NTFS. Furthermore, make sure the booting stuff for NT is below track 1024, since this applies as well. I'd also make sure that the NT partition is the only active one.
