Ya, that's what turned my user directory into a file and hosed my dcop server. I install 1.4 and Nautilus setup and took over - and I mean took over. After that I had a case of creeping corruption. One by one directory, files, and services started to become corrupt. I had to re-install the OS because it became apparent that it was only a matter of time until the whole fs would go into the sh#ter. Frankly, I was never a huge fan of Gnome, now I avoid it. Hi: Before we blast GNOME for it's supposed shortcomings, it should be pointed out that the KDE rpms at SuSE's LinuKS site are not up to date either. They too produce problems. Perhaps the packagers are having terrific difficulty making the RPM's. In any event I do not think it is a GNOME problem exclusively. I also have a suspicion that the nVIDIA drivers, whether they be nv or from nVIDIA, play a role in these problems. Just my $0.02. On Monday 28 May 2001 00:01, you wrote:

I wasn't blasting Gnome per se, I was voicing my dislike of my experience. I don't begrudge anyone using the WM they like. What kills me is that If a distributors is making an update available I would hope that it would improve my "computing experience" rather than make this newbies life a headache. I am extremely fond of my new SuSE Linux OS, I just wish I didn't have to learn the hard way that their Gnome packages would wreak my fs. I was checking the Gnome foundation, Ximian, and Eazel site a few times a week, but nothing for SuSE 7.1. Then SuSE had 1.4 on the ftp server and I though it would be a safe bet to use SuSE's port of the Gnome 1.4, I was wrong. That's what I meant by "now I avoid it". I don't know any programming languages and I'm not experienced enough to be able to resurrect my OS when something like I experienced happened. On Monday 28 May 2001 12:08 am, Jonathan Drews wrote:

Hi Curtis: No accusation intended. I really suspect the nVIDIA drivers for a lot of this. I know Ben is using nVIDIA. I am using nv. My GNOME desktop functions pretty good. However I use GMC and Sawfish. I am most interested in these problems as I believe these massive downloads of 80 Mb or more, to redo desktops are flawed. I really think these rpm's have to be installed in a specific order. Also these over the wire installs are not as good as as these the integrated install that is performed at the initial install. My reasoning is that many writers to the list have lamented the deficiencies of upgrades rather than a fresh install. Well a downloaded desktop is a kind of upgrade. It too should be prone to the same difficulties as a regular upgrade. On Monday 28 May 2001 00:28, you wrote:

NP :) Just wanted to make sure that I was understood. I don't want to make enemies unduely. The users on this list are very useful and an important resource for me. It is by far the best user grp I've found. I have even been able to help others, which is very gratifying for a new user. Cheers. Curtis On Monday 28 May 2001 12:31 am, Jonathan Drews wrote:

I don't get cross with people on the list nor would I be rude. My real desire is to find out why some people have success with these desktops and others have problems.

Well I just got a note from Ben saying he got Gnome to work by copying all the directories from his wife's machine to his! That means that the RPM's or the order of the RPM installation is the culprit. I really suspect the RPM's then. I wish there was a way to know of a specific installation order. I am having some trouble with KDE 2.1.1. I hope to get KDE 2.2 2Alpha in. It's suppose to be out today. For what it is worth KDE, rpm's should be installed in this order: 1) kdesupport.rpm first. 2) kdelibs.rpm next same way as before. 3) kdebase.rpm. then everything else in any order. I am still suspect of this though. Here is a *really* good tutorial on Linux/UNIX, The Rute Users Tutorial: http://rute.sourceforge.net/ I mention it since you say you are a newcomer to Linux. -- Cheers, Jonathan
Yeah, well. I wouldn't blame the nVidia drivers. Mainly because I have EVERY other WM installed and they all work fine...minus Gnome. I haven't ever had a good experience with Gnome under SuSE ..it's been one of my bitches for a long time..before I worked for SuSE..while I worked for SuSE and after I worked for SuSE. I think that if the Gnome packages are going to be done 1/2 ass..then they shouldn't be done at all. Let Ximian or someone else do them..and SuSE can stick with KDE. I don't even really like Gnome as a desktop anymore. I like some of the apps so I install the deskop. I have plenty of space for the whole thing and a good pipe to the net .. so what the hell. I just started it up today so I could be in the environment when I was helping a co-worker with Gnome and it never functioned. I just got frustrated and returned to KDE. I just wish that both desktops were given equal time. I mean who gives a frell if KDE developers are employeed there..I don't. I'm a user and I want the choice of using either at any given time and having them work reasonably well. I don't want blinking desktops with bug report windows popping up left and right because applets are dying. It's sad and extremely unprofessional. I just would like it done right or not at all. *shrug* oh well. Gnome 1.4 works on my Solaris 8 workstation at work..and it's 1.4 which is " an unsupported " beta release as far as Sun is concerned. oh well. Somethings in life are consistant at least. ;) * Jonathan Drews (j.e.drews@worldnet.att.net) [010527 22:34]: ->Hi Curtis: -> -> No accusation intended. Hmmm I've been getting strange behavior when dialing up isp with kppp, - at the instant of loging on, the entire X-screen completly blanks for about 1 second, then recovers. I first noticed this the day after installing kde2.1-updates, from SuSE's LinuKS directory. It seems to happen in all window managers kde.kde2,windowmaker,fvwm2, and gnome. My gnome is still the older version, the one from SuSE70 CD's . I'm using suse2.4.2 - clone-config'd kernel - ati video-card-X-stock-mach64 driver . I never had problems with video blanking before though. bet it's something that nobody has answers to as of yet !! ; - just checking in on this - John WM

I'd have to bet on the drivers too. That's because both KDE2.1.1 and Gnome 1.4 installed just fine on my Matrox G200 system. I'm not into all that 3D stuff, so I don't need the fastest graphics card.
