WINDOWS GOES SOFT ON UNIX Insignia Solutions, famous for bringing Windows to the Mac OS with its SoftWindows 95 and Real PC products, is set to sell SoftWindows 95 for UNIX to Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun UNIX workstation owners on June 1, 1998. Crusty has learned that UNIX workstation owners will be able to buy the Insignia product in license packs of 5, 10, 25, or 50 users. As told to Your Watery Wayfarer, "SoftWindows 95 for UNIX is the leading PC compatibility software-only solution in the industry for UNIX workstations. It allows customers to run Microsoft Windows applications on their Sun, HP, and IBM workstations. Large corporations and small workgroups use SoftWindows 95 for UNIX to provide PC compatibility for UNIX workstation users, eliminating the need for two computers on the desktop and enhancing user productivity and communication within the corporation. Users can seamlessly switch between UNIX and Windows applications, and can even cut and paste between the two environments." "SoftWindows 95 is a useful value-added component to the complete CAD/CAM solution we provide to our customers," said Tony Pompeo, principal with L&H Consultants, Inc., a leading CATIA CAD/CAM integrator. "We are very pleased with the performance of SoftWindows 95 and the access to Windows applications it provides for our end users." *** I wonder... I've seen the Mac version perform on a MacOS...or rather not actually! But it will serve the purpose I guess... *** End users, The Argumentative Arthropod notes, who are more and more often dumping their UNIX workstations for fast Pentium II Windows 95 and NT boxes. *** Hmmmm, when did he fall out of the tree!?? Dumping UNIX workstations...!?? Another "Yeah-I-am-such-a-professional-'cause-I-use-Windows" kind of guy... *** In addition, SoftWindows 95 for UNIX covers all the Windows compatibility bases, including TCP/IP networking. As such, SoftWindows 95 for UNIX includes a DLL compliant with the WinSock 1.1 specification, including support for both 16-bit and 32-bit WinSock connections. The SoftWindows 95 winsock.dll communicates directly with the TCP/IP protocol stack in the host UNIX system. As told to The Crustacean, this networking method minimizes the amount of Intel code executed when communicating via TCP/IP and results in a more efficient implementation of winsock.dll. Pricing for SoftWindows 95 for UNIX varies by the license pack purchased. And why do you think that is Mickael? This is a frontal by MS on Linux. This product is not an emulation rather works at the kernal level, intended to give MS access to the Unix world through a joint venture with HP and others. MS wants in on the billion dallar Unix market and guess who they want to side step. ch Mickael Remond wrote:

Actually Microsoft doesn't even acknowledge linux. Until gnome or kde makes it unnecessary for new users to know any unix they won't be in the same market as a desktop os. Microsoft wants Sun's market. Releasing a solaris version of Internet Explorer wasn't for the profits, I assure you, just as not supporting sun's java standard and instead coming up with that active-x crap was a jab at sun as well. It doesn't benefit m$ to play ball with the industry unless they are trying to advance their own technology. Microsoft won't acknowledge linux until linux is getting some of their marketshare or until Microsoft could profit by stealing the linux market the way they have gone after Silicon Graphics' market. Don't tell anyone I said this; I'd get burned at the stake if this slipped into say, the SuSE list (G) but why doesn't M$ distribute Linux in an NT/Unix bundle? *Then* they can boast about integration. They can add on to the open source kernel, keep their addons proprietary (as long as that will last) and people will love Linux because, "Hey, it's Microsoft" I know, then nobody would use the NT side of things. Because Microsoft doesn't want to advance technology that they didn't develop. Their strategy has been to buy existing technology and bury it regardless of whether or not it was superior to their own internally developed product or no. Besides, didn't Microsoft try unix once with Xenix, fail and end up selling it to SCO? [cut] XENIX XENIX is directly based on UNIX Version 7. Its first version, 2.3, was released in 1980 by Microsoft for use on microcomputers (IBM PCs or clones). XENIX 3.0, released in 1983, included new features from 4.1BSD and from AT&'s System III. Finally, the latest version, XENIX 5.0 was released in 1985, and conforms to the System V Interface Definition. [paste] Been there, done that already ;) jonathan@aracnet.net wrote:

They buy or take and smother, more likely. The GPL *should* protect at least the heart of Linux.

That was news to me.

I still like the idea; M$ would get something for nothing! They're giving things away left & right to steal market share, they're starting to port stuff (or purchase stuff) like crazy to unix, NT supports some nominal unix services out of the box already, COM ported to unix, M$ Terminal Server, it's looking like they're going to turn to something unix-y someday soon. (It's the only way to sell something _really_ scalable!) With something like MI/X that comes on the SuSE CD, think of 100% Windows compatibility *and* your favorite X programs, plus a telnet session when you want to get down to business... ahhh... Oh, Bodo & SuSE team, if M$ comes knocking with cash in hand... _STALL_!!! --------------- original heresy ---------------

Well, actually, doing that is kind of ... near impossible, luckily, thanks to the GPL. They can make proprietary programs and run them under Linux. But they can't make a program which is partly (or partly derived) from Linux code and not make it GPL'd, too. Meaning they'd had to give out the code, allow everyone to give it away, copy it, munge it, and then sell it/give it away ... and with the kind of source M$ produces, they just can't do that, people would ROFLOLAndDie ... or scream in horror. They can't even use libraries under the GPL for proprietary programs (but proprietary programs are allowed to be linked to libraries under the GPLibraryL). Anyway, M$ will not successfully be able to make a stand where open sourced programms are better, faster, much more stable ... etc. E.g. compare sendmail to M$ Exchange ... -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". Well, it *can't* be impossible to make a commercial venture out of distributing/adding value to Linux because companies like SuSE and Caldera are doing it.

Ah perhaps I was unclear/partially wrong. I meant _keep_ the open source kernel as-is and build tools and apps around it.
Anyway, M$ will not successfully be able to make a stand where open sourced programms are better, faster, much more stable ... etc. E.g. compare sendmail to M$ Exchange ...
Yet exc{HANG}e is selling. Better, faster, more stable doesn't necessarily sell. I look at something like Netscape, they sold it (for a while) and it was completely proprietary. And [at least on the WingDings platform] it wasn't half as stable as M$IE. I think Microsoft is going to do all of this without being a distributor anyways. Well, wabi for your win16 apps, and some things (like starcraft) run in wine. Soon perhaps hardware will be fast enough and bochs mature enough that running win95/98 in linux will be practical. Bochs! Emulate your own architecture! Mickael wrote:

It's not the answer, yet, but after some more development and by the time intel processors are pushing gigahertz speeds it might actually be practical for some applications.
