[opensuse] Laptop recomendations
I'm going to have to replace my old (6+ years) Toshiba that has a amd 450Mhz processor and a whopping 20GB disk. I'm looking for recommendations for a mid range ($1k - 1.5k) laptop that is compatible with Opensuse 10.3. Please, no flamefests!! The current issue of Linux Journal has an extensive article on just that subject.
From personal experience, I've installed SuSE Linux on both my Lenovo notebook and my Toshiba laptop without much drama. Of the two, the Lenovo was easier, requiring the least trouble to get everything working right.
The LJ article approaches the subject from the standpoint of what's available without Windows already installed. Not only can that save some money (especially if you're never going to use the Windows license), but you stand a better chance of having everything you need for Linux already installed -- like video and sound support, wireless driver, and so on. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I would say pretty much any laptop will do. Watch for intel wifi, as they are supposedly - and in my own experience - better than broadcom. Pardon the piggy-back on this. ACER makes a good laptop, I've got two of them here, and they stand behind their hardware, as well as will not void the warranty if you replatform a Windows Box into a Linux box. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I would get any thinkpad model that you felt was within your budget. There are no other laptop manufacturers out there IMHO. FYI, there are quite a many ebay stores that sell thinkpads still sealed in the box but are a few models out, for dirt cheap. most still have 3 year warranty. I've come across sealed box T42's for 460 bucks. Just wanted my .02 out there! Good luck.... On Dec 31, 2007 6:15 PM, Randal Jarrett <ragnarok1@gmail.com> wrote:

I got myself a Dell Inspiron 600m about three years ago and would have been cussing them out like crazy, except I got their extended service warrantee, something I just about never get. It's had some hardware problems which made extending the warrantee cheap by comparison. Their service (farmed out, of course) has been great. They come to my place within two or three days of my reporting a hardware problem and I'm back in business. So unless you've got a second Linux machine to use when your new laptop is down, I'd recommend spending a little more to get the extended warrantee for the new laptop. I like how well my Acer 5100 works with openSUSE 10.3, I got it off of Newegg.com for about $800 and it has a AMD Turion 64 x2 processor that clocks out a 1.8Ghz, 120 GB HDD. The only complant I have with it is the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 card, of course if ATI made decent drivers then I would not have this complant. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Anything HP. I'd prefer a HP Business Notebook, for example the HP nx7400 (RU430ET), I got one of those and had not a single hardware or compability problem til today (using it heavily for nearly a year now).

FYI, I had a terrible nightmare with an HP laptop I bought and returned recently HP. Don't get me wrong it was a good price and with the exception of the battery that was sticking out 12-cell (standard!!) it was a really nice machine. Some of its components nVidia NIC and broadcom wireless, plus the CD burner were not recognized so I returned. Otherwise the processor was AMD X2 1.9Hz TL-58 and it was fast :). I eventually got a Sony vgn-FZ240 which has Intel components and despite a problem I am still having with wireless (4965agn) everything else works. Good luck with your search!. At my work we buy quite a few IBM/Lenovos which all seem to work pretty well, we've also had quite good experiences with HP and Toshiba machines. We've not been buying Sonys for quite some time because they used to be a right pain to get Linux running on. Perhaps we could reconsider that now. Nah, I think they still include Betamax drives in the front slot. You'll have a hard time getting linux distros that support the latest Sony Betamax drivers. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Most of the recent IBM 's a very compatible with SUSE specifically the ALL Intel ones. I have some luck with the DV series from HP although no way near as friendly as IBM's the DV6000 and DV9000 are fine if you don't mind using the NDISwrapper or are really good with firmware tools. The newer Broadcom NICS aren't as compatible with the firmware stripper as the ones from just over a year ago. I also didn't get most of the peripheral tech up, like the fingerprint reader and webcam. I didn't try to hard either, I have been reading that several people have been able to fully enable there HP laptops. I have been running an R51 from IBM from the day I first heard Novell was getting into linux. I started with 8.x then 9.0 the NLD9 , I even worked on the Intel IPW2200 wireless driver testing team. since then I have never had to even think about my drivers. Basically the more Intel chips you get the easier the install , and no I don't work there, I just have been a Big Blue customer for close to 15 years. I use a Samsung X65, a great laptop and it works fine with 10.3, WLAN out of the box.
