[opensuse] blacklisting device by ID in udev rules?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Any udev gurus here? I have a Toshiba USB flash mem stick that has a separate "U3 Smart" ISO device that is intended for use with windoze. it is always automounted first and this makes it impossible to mount the flash device. Here's device information: PNY Attache 1Gb flash stick: ~ ID 0930:6540 Toshiba Corp ~ This is the main flash disk part.. It cannot be mounted when the ~ "U3 SMART" partition is mounted. ~ usb-0930_USB_Flash_Memory_0F10CB6881E1992A-0:0 ~ usb-0930_USB_Flash_Memory_0F10CB6881E1992A-0:0-part1 ~ The "U3 SMART" media part of the flash drive. Windoze autoruns ~ this ISO partition to use the flash device. ~ usb-0930_USB_Flash_Memory_0F10CB6881E1992A-0:1 This last device is the one to be blacklisted. How can I blacklist the device using the ID so it is never mounted? The ID is unique so it can be done with udev, if udev supports device blacklisting. The docs on hand mention nothing about blacklisting devices by ID. No, the ISO partition cannot be deleted. It is ROM. Thanks, ~ jd == The duck hunter trained his retriever to walk on water. No, the ISO partition cannot be deleted. It is ROM.
That sounds similar to the USB drive I have. That partition isn't ROM, but it is a compressed partition type that I couldn't get Linux to defeat. The manufacturer had a Windows only tool that could be used to delete both partitions so the drive could be used how I want it. I have since thought I probably could have used dd to have overwritten the whole drive, including the partition table, and I could have done it all in Linux, but that will have to wait for the next opportunity to try. I have the same thing, but from Geeksquad. My suse 11.0 automounts both. Obviously, I can't do anything with the U3 -- not even delete it -- but it doesn't waste much room and doesn't otherwise interfere with my work, so I gave up after trying a couple of times. I've got some important stuff on mine right now, but I'll give the dd thing a try when I can, unless you get to it first. HTH. fdisk says it is not a partition. I have other USB sticks that were partitioned and I removed those, formatting them for Linux. This is the only one that reports two separate devices. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn0 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFJKaCWhpL3F+HeDrIRAjwNAKCvbx0EWzvfSqt7TaaUPhhJHLt3NwCfV57l 6SAFdJ3G7uCh0vydUhaxRks= =vZVg -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't know, but you could try making an entry on fstab for mounting that iso by-id, and giving it the "noauto" option. Linux should read that entry and not automatically mount it. The part I don't know is, if the other RW partition will then be automatically mounted. I guess it will, but you'll have to try and find out :-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. It was simply ignored. Was. Past tense. Never expected it to work but it seems that things have changed in the kernel while I wasn't looking. It seems to be working now. And the drive or sub-device or whatever is now being detected as a writeable CD drive. Interesting.
