Yesterday evening while on-line I heard an ominous pop only to discover that my US Robotics Sportster Voice 56K Faxmodem had bit the dust. Not to worry though as it came with a life time warranty. So today I called US Robotics to get warranty service and was told no deal, I had purchased the modem to work under win95 and as I was now using Linux, an UNSUPPORTED OS, my warranty was null and void! The warranty was only going to be acknowledged if I was using windows. So a heads up to any considering purchase of a U S Robotics product. If you aren't running windows, its doesn't come with a warranty; a bit too much redmond for my taste! dave

That's such bullshit. You definitely need to call again and talk to someone else on the phone. This is even more ridiculous considering US Robotics is _owned_ by 3Com and check out 3Com's linux page: http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linux.htm They offer GPL'd Linux drivers for their NICs and USR won't recognize your warranty because you're using Linux?! You definitely need to call them again. -- Karol Pietrzak PGP KeyID: 3A1446A0

Hi: If that's the case, I want to add my $.02, and suggest Dave also ask to have the tech that said that to him tracked down and disciplined. I wonder if they honor warranties for government agencies they sell to? Tom

I have a friend who had a US Robotics Modem that stopped working. No worry, it has a lifetime warrantee. I rang them up and was told that the board was fried probably due to lightning or a power surge. Sorry not covered. I would like to know what does their lifetime warrantee cover. Eddie

Failure due to workmanship or design fault is the usual thing covered. If it just fails on you for an undetermined reason they usually ask for it to be shipped back where sometimes a tech will test it to see if it works or fails. And if it fails to determine how it failed. Lightening strikes are listed as Acts of God, power surge is something preventable with cheap surge protectors, if you have one they usually come with a warranty to insure your equipment against lightening strikes, power surges etc. You have to go through them for any claims. Be careful with any warranty, espeically with Acts of God or Acts of War even outside the technology field. These terms should be listed on the USR website, if you cannot find it ask for a link or a copy to see what is precisly covered. Had to deal with this when I worked at Penguin Computing. We should have covered against acts of user, amazing how some users managed to melt SCSI hard drives fairly often. Matt
We had a massive power surge / lightening strike here a few months ago - USR Pro Message Modem go bye-bye...:-( I was expecting about $100 to have it fixed (they sell for $300 here), and they asked me to post it off to them.. Two (2) days later a BRAND NEW one arrived by courier (haven't even unwrapped it yet, and that was 7 months ago !!), and they didn';t even want the power supply or anything else returned. Top marks to USR Australia, I say !! Jon -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- WTC > /dev/null ; chmod +x /usr/bin/laden ; rm -rf /usr/bin/laden

USR gave me an incident number, and offered a returns number, on an issue they were told was occurring _exclusively_ within Linux. Michael
I'll never buy a USR modem again. Not that I usually do anyways, cheaper is better for me at home! hehe Arthur H. Johnson II arthur@linuxbox.nu The Linux Box http://www.linuxbox.nu On Mon, 26 Nov 2001, Dave C. Johanson wrote:

Well, USR actually made good on the written contract and a new 56K Voice Faxmodem Pro arrived in the mail today. dave "Dave C. Johanson" wrote:
