We're a bit short on browsers here. If you use KDE2, then there's Konquerer. Opera is working on porting its browser to linux, and there are some nice text mode browsers. I'd probably say that Netscape is as close as you're going to get to an IE clone, considering how ofter it crashes. As for checking a hotmail account, take a look at GotMail: http://www.hawkins.emu.id.au/gotmail/ This will download your Hotmail email and save it to disk. Netscape for UNIX is one of the worst pieces of junk to ever come from a major computer company, IMO. It crashes way more than IE, btw. (on my Win2k system, I can run all day without a single crash in IE - no small feat in Windowsland). My suggestions would be Konqueror and KMail for now, and then checkout theKompany.com's new e-mail project (based on KMagellan) once it matures a little. theKompany.com's project feature most of the functionality of Outlook, including HTML-mail rendered courtesy of Konqueror. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Tim could not be more right here, surely. I can't remember who ran the thread a while ago under the line 'the browser misery', but he was right too. However, it's taken Tim to make the point that Netscape on Linux (also on Solaris) is way less stable and satisfactory than IE 5.5, a horrible admission to have to make, but let's not kid ourselves. Konqueror, at least in the version with KDE 2.0.1, is much better, and something you can show to waverers and doubters with pride. I'm sure it will go on to be a truly star app., though of course you need to be in KDE2 to use it (?right?) But I've had several frustrating experiences trying to show Linux off to friends and potential users, having banged on about how stable it is, what wonderful connectivity it has, only to be subjected to a depressing display of bad manners and plain crashing out from Netscrape. 'I never get these problems with Explorer' is the usual reply. Why is Netscape (including the 'stability-fixed' 4.76) such a dog, and why is it so slow in getting fixed? Readers of this list, including me I hasten to add, may well be prepared to put up with a thing on the basis that it's not made by MS, but the average punter who needs to be convinced before Linux achieves mass market desktop acceptance will tend to go on what they see running in terms of apps. Thanks to all those who replied with advice on Netscape 6 - I still can't get the install to work, whichever files I download, it seg faults, and frankly I can't see why I should have to struggle to fix that - it's supposed to be a professionally produced programme and should work. Some suggested 'downloading the source' for N6, but I don't seem to be able to find it - one kind gent whose name I don't have in front of me suggests that people meant 'the source for Mozilla' rather than N6, does anyone in fact know of a place to find compilable N6 source? Bye all, Fergus

Yep. You're right. Nobody's gonna reply, since you have your message messed up with HTML tags. Did you try looking at Microsoft for an IE for UNIX? For a mail program to "Get" hotmail, look at fetchmail http://www.fetchmail.org and RTFM. It'll take some work, but you can set fetchmail up to retrieve from Hotmail. HTML is mail is a Bad Thing(tm).
Did you try looking at Microsoft for an IE for UNIX?
Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express are only available on Solaris and HP-UX. (http://www.microsoft.com/unix/ie/default.asp) As already posted, Konquerer and Mozilla are viable options.

Gotmail (http://www.hawkins.emu.id.au/gotmail/) would be easier to employ, certainly as a beginner, plus it doesn't have a fucking manual, just a simple friendly note on how to use it.
NOw, if you want to use all the Microsoft stuff, why go to Linux at all?
He asked for _clones_ , not the real Microsoft stuff. Maybe it's because the user interfacing of Microsoft products is well above average or IE has a better stability record than Netscape? Marc

Make sure the box hasn't got anything important on it. IE on UNIX tends to do the same sorts of tricks as it does under Windows: I heard a story about someone who installed it on a Solaris box and ended up having to completely reinstall the OS after IE threw a wobbler.
Konqueror + KMail in KDE2 are the closest I have found. They work really, really well for most people. I personally use Mutt for mail because I need my mail anywhere .. anytime. I have been using Konq for 3 months almost exclusively..if it couldn't handle a site I use Mozilla 0.6 which works pretty well. * Pit Apps (iam_007_007@hotmail.com) [010123 05:46]: -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:brosenb@suse.com *************************************** SuSE Inc. 580 Second St Suite 210 Oakland CA 94607 U.S.A Tel: 1-510-628-3380 EXT:5086 Fax: 1-510-628-3381 *************************************** "My opinions are not a reflection of the opinions of SuSE Inc."
