ok, I have just fired up the 10.1 live DVD. First of all the good news :-) my scanner works :-)))) yippee at last. Rotation didn't work but I guess that is due to the amount of memory needed and this is the live disk. What I did find puzzling is the fact that my monitor was not in the database. I have a 17" LG Electronics Studioworks 700s. It was in SuSe 10's database of monitors so why isn't it in 10.1? It's not as if it's a particularly old monitor. Any ideas? Pruning is good but this is a little drastic. I'm going to find a spare drive and install properly now. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. Try it in VESA mode. Oh I can do that ok, Carl, I'm just puzzled because the monitor has been in all the other versions that I have used. Those being 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, and 10. Why suddenly drop it when there are still far older devices that are kept. It doesn't make sense. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. Kevan, Did you check the actual database to see if the monitor was listed? I ask because, I just installed a new graphics card and connected an Acer AL1917 monitor to it. In checking the database file, I saw that this monitor was not listed, so I added it manually, so as to avoid setup difficulties later. Turns out it wasn't necessary, because apparently sax talked with the both the card and monitor, setting up both and adding the monitor to the database with all the correct settings! Now, I'm not sure how long this has gone on, but I suspect for a while, because thinking back, the same thing happened with my ATI 9200 and the AOC 19" crt I had previously. Now if in fact your monitor was already in the database file, it seems odd that it's not now, but you can add it yourself. If though, it was being read, as mine have been, then I would guess somebody quit talking to somebody or you've made a change in hardware. regards, Lee -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Ah, now, does the list that comes up show all the stored monitors (& associated profiles) or is there a longer list? I noticed that my monitor had been picked up as a generic model. Hmmm, I thought, this is different. So, at this stage I opened up the list that is available when first installing. This is what I'm wondering about if this is indeed a full list. I cannot see why it wouldn't be but you never know :-) My puzzlement is more a worry that it may cause problems for a newcomer as, I have already stated, I can find out the settings and input them manually because I know how/what to do. No, no hardware changes at all in this particular set up. I honestly think there has been some pruning on the monitors list....why, I don't know? -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. If there is a longer list somewhere, I haven't found it. I'm guessing the list does get pruned occasionally due to the age of some of the monitors. I wouldn't think that the new monitors would be removed though, although stranger things have happened. ;-) I don't worry so much about the newbies, because it's very, very seldom that sax2 doesn't come up with some match to give them a reasonable display. It would have to be pretty old hardware and there are not too many newbies out there using older hardware. Of course, since there isn't a standard about how the hardware talks, I suppose it would be difficult for sax2 to get everything right from the start. It does a pretty good job overall with many different variations, but there are these rare occasions like you've experienced. I believe that the SuSE guys will accept monitor settings to add to the database still, so anyone with exceptionally new or yet unlisted monitors should pass that info to them. regards, Lee -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

bugzilla.novell.com. /usr/share/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors is the file one could add their monitor settings to until an update happens. Check the /var/log/SaX.log and /var/log/Xorg.log files for the necessary hardware identification info the Monitors file.
