I found that barry-util-0.14-23.1 has a bad udev rule file, /etc/udev/rules.d/10-blackberry.rules Te effect of the bad rule file is that root is able to run all the barry programs, but regular users have insufficient privilege to access a connected BlackBerry. barry-0.14 is the latest release, but the udev rule is fixed in CVS.
