What's the difference between "Online Update (YOU)" and "Install and Remove Software" and "System Update"? All of them end up at "Package Manager". I managed to find this page: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/11823.html which says YOU is for applying security patches to installed software, but not for changing versions of software. I did happen to notice that a downgrade of OOo (2.0beta to 1.1.3) appears to be an option in YOU (haven't tried that yet), but not the other two - which seems to contradict info on webpage?

That is the primary purpose of YOU, but as you've noticed, it's not the only one. YOU is used to distribute patches and fixes primarily, but it's also used for a few other things. Notably for the distribution of the nvidia graphics driver and in 9.3 for the multimedia packs (basically the mp3 codec). You can think of YOU as the only official path for package distribution in a released version. There are other places and ways to get software, but YOU is the only official one. System Update is for wholesale updates from package repositories, for example from the supplementary directory on the ftp site. It's really only a shortcut for a couple of commands in the 'install/remove software' section, to make the updates simpler Install and Remove software is mainly for single package installation
