OK Update. I installed 11.2 from the kde live cd on a dell gx260. I have Internet and kde4. I am 4 hours into the install and cannot change the screen resolution beyond 800x600 on a 1440x900 flat screen, (there seems to be no option in Yast anymore to be able to do this)
1440x900 was the last of the common widescreen modes to arise, so the oldest of video BIOS won't have it included. A GX150 definitely is not 1440x900 capable in Windows, but IIRC is in openSUSE back around 11.0 or before, and thus should be for a GX260.
I just tried sax2 on a GX260, and it locked up, forcing a hard reset to make usable again. http://fm.no-ip.com/tmp/SUSE/112/SaX.log-i845G-os112 Adding 'Option "NoRandr"' to xorg.conf did the same thing. X -configure trapped: http://fm.no-ip.com/tmp/SUSE/112/Xorg.0.log-gx260-os112-x-configure
xorg.conf*i845G-os112 on http://fm.no-ip.com/tmp/SUSE/112/ all work on my GX260 with Dell/Trinitron CRT. I have to think you could re-comment the newest one appropriately for a 1440x900 display and have it work. I have no 1440x900 hardware to try.
Sorry Felix. Sorry everyone. The GX260 with the Intel graphics works with 11.1, that's what I have at work along with several with old ati and nvidia cards. It was around this time last year when the Intel didn't work on the 11.0 to 11.1 upgrade so in a panic I bought a batch of old cards from e-bay. Then opensuse released an xorg patch around Februatry and all was well with the onboard Intel again, the ones that still worked that is. What I have at home is a GX260 with an old riva tnt in one of the slots. It's not Intel as I last said. I have to think the onboard 2002 845G chip would likely work at 1440x900, while I'd be surprised if the more than two years older Riva could. -- " We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion." If you're trying to do without xorg.conf it may be using the VESA driver instead of the Intel driver. AFAICT, the VESA driver can't be expected to support the younger 1440x900 mode. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_display_modes To see whether 845G 1440x900 capability actually exists prior to figuring out how to do it in X, you can try booting with vga=864 or 866 to set 1440x900 on your consoles, according to the table at the above URL. If you get an invalid mode message during boot using either 864 or 866 it may be impossible to do 1440x900 with an 845G in X. -- " We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion." If you have a 1080p TV with a VGA port, try it, with both the TNT, and the Intel. 1920x1080 is a much older mode than 1440x900, and thus may work where 1440x900 does not. If 1920x1080 works, a display swap probably wouldn't be too hard to manage, though most likely more than a less geriatric AGP card off eBay. Inexpensive 1920x1080 PC displays are all over the stores now in sizes at least down to 20". -- " We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion." I just tried without the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted. It works the same. It doesn't seem to need that file anymore. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It isn't supposed to "need" it any more, but not having one often doesn't work or doesn't work well with older hardware. The same isn't good if you can't use your modern display's native 1440x900 mode because of its attachment to a 10 year old video card. Try removing the old TNT card and trying on the onboard video port without using any xorg.conf. If you can't get 1440x900 that way, try the xorg.conf file I gave you a link to last night, but only after uncommenting 2-3 lines that include the string "1440x900". Start with the modes line of your choice of color depth in 'Section "Screen"', and the 'Option "PreferredMode" "1440x900"' line in 'Section "Monitor"'. If that works but the font and other sizes don't seem right, you can uncomment one of the 1440x900 lines that begin with '#DisplaySize' to make everything bigger (higher DPI) or smaller (lower DPI). -- " We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion."
