can't get Audacity to run -- missing an rpm that I can't seem to locate
Hi, everyone. I had Audacity running on my pooter under SuSE 9.2, but I am unable to get it running now that I've upgraded to 9.3. I have the Audacity rpm. I tried to install it using Yast and got a dependency message -- that I need libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0 I did a search on the 9.3 DVD but it did not find the rpm on the DVD. I then did a Google search for it and found lots of indications that other folks have had the same problem locating this rpm. I tried to install Audacity by ignoring the dependency message and, of course, Audacity won't run. When I try to run it from a shell I get the following message: gil@phred:~> audacity audacity: error while loading shared libraries: libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory gil@phred:~> audacity OK, so I need the rpm. Can anyone point me an URL where I can get libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0 Many thanks! :o) Gil

You need wxGTK and wxGTK-compat packages installed. pin would tell you this. Dylan -- "The man who strikes first admits that his ideas have given out." (Chinese Proverb)

Dylan, thanks. Both packages **are already** installed. But Audacity still won't run. When I try to start Audacity from the SuSE menu I get the little spinning "X" icon at the bottom. It eventually goes off when Audacity fails to start. If I try to launch Audacity from a shell I still get the following error message: gil@phred:~> audacity audacity: error while loading shared libraries: libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory gil@phred:~> Seems that is should be running, but it's still looking for libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0 Gil

Which versions of audacity and wxGTK are installed? Where did each come from? I run the audacity from the 9.3 media with no trouble. Dylan -- "The man who strikes first admits that his ideas have given out." (Chinese Proverb)

There is no Audacity on my 9.3 DVD. I know that sounds incredible, and my wife insists she loaded Audacity from the DVD, but it's not there. (Or it's WELL hidden.) I got Audacity from an rpm <audacity-1.2.3-1.pm.3.i586> that my wife found and sent to me. The wxGTK and wxGTK-compat packages that you reference in your previous e-mail came from the 9.3 DVD. Note also this interesting issue: I cannot search for anything on the 9.3 DVD using the Yast search function in "Install and Remove Software." When I select "search" and then try to enter what I want to locate, nothing shows up. The cursor is in the box, but no letters can be entered. I am locked-out of the search function. The way I have to find things is to select "Package groups" and then "zzz All." That was how I found the two wxGTK packages. But even using this method there is no Audacity to be found. Strange, isn't it?? Gil

Well, I can't speak for the actual DVD, but it's in the ftp sources as version 1.2.3-6.1 (same version, different build) so you might try uninstalling the one you have and getting the package from an ftp mirror. You could also mount the DVD and look for it manually under <mountpoint>/suse/i586. I find it hard to believe it's on the ftp and not the dvd.

Is this in KDE, running yast itself, or through the KDE Control Centre? I've seen that "behaviour" and as a result always use yast in a terminal or on a console.

You were looking with a lower-case "a" weren't you (not being sarky, just a silly mistake I've made in the past!) Dylan

The version I have is the latest on the Pacman site. If you can point me to another that has the more recent build that would be great. I did mount the DVD, went to <mountpoint>.suse/i586 and there is NOT anything audacity in the over 3000 rpms shown there. :o( It does not exist on this DVD (or it is WELL hidden!). :o) (snip)

Well, actually I am not able to search using an "a" or an "A." Remember, I can't enter **anything** at all into the "Install and Uninstall Software" search function. It's effectively disabled as far as I can tell Thanks. Gil

Dylan, thanks!! I found the build you recommended and it worked! Maybe the build from Pacman that I was using is too old to use with 9.3?? In any case, Audacity now opens and works. Many thanks for letting me know about the more recent build. :o) Gil
