Hi There, Im a first time SuSE user (long time linux 'user') and have installed 10.1 on my Toshiba Tecra A6, which has a Mobility Radeon X1400 card. I have the drivers installed and working as expected... but am having some trouble getting multiple monitors setup. Is there any one who has this setup and working correctly, or is this not the place to discuss? I am trying to get it running so that i have the external LCD monitor running at 1280x1024 and the main laptop monitor off... I just cant seem to get this working with any tools that are available (ATI or otherwise). Thanks for any response in advance! Hi Simon, I don't know if this relates to your problem or not, but I saved this in my personal 'troubleshooting' posts archive:
Try your laptop user's guide first. Does your laptop have a function (F1-F12) key with a picture of two monitors on it - usually F4 or F5. On many laptop, you hold down a special "Fn" key and then press the F4 or F5 (or whatever) to cycle through various output modes. Each time I press this combination on my laptop changes from LCD only - VGA only - both LCD and VGA - LCD only - VGA only - etc ...

I wish it was that easy!!! I have the feeling that my toshiba's screen choice keys (as you say above) is software driven, rather than hardware - as when i only see the 'screen menu' in windows and any number of tries only gives me both screens mirrored. Hi Simon, Again, I don't know if this will help but I this very recent thread was also in my troubleshooting archive:

Hi,
I saw your request when I was at work and sent myself a note to forward you the xorg.conf from my system at home. That system is a Sony PCG-GRX670 notebook that uses a Radeon 7500. The attached xorg.conf works on that system under SuSE 10.1. During the 10.1 beta I complained about this very issue .. it also does not work in Ubuntu, which also uses the newer xorg. It is in one of the Novell bug reports but I've now lost track of it. The problem apparently lies in the new radeon driver. SuSE made available the older radeon driver for folks (like me) having issues with the new one. So you need to plug in either "radeon10b" or, in some cases, "radeonold" for the "Driver".
Good luck,
- Bruce
With Bruce's kind permission I am sending this out to the list.
Changing the driver to the radeon10b and using the xorg.conf I posted worked perfectly. Bruce mentions there is a bug report, I had not seen that I will look for it this weekend and see if it was resolved with a fix or if its still open.

Hi Simon, It is unclear to me .. are you using the ATI drivers or the stock Xorg drivers? You mentioned ATI tools so I'm thinking that you probably installed the ATI drivers. I have the v5200 and use the 8.25.18 ATI driver with success. Are you sure that the X1400 is supported by the ATI drivers? (btw: Does anyone else find the ATI support site for linux confusing? Where is there a chart on that site which says which driver to download for which card? For example is an X1400 (which begins with "X1") part of the "FireGL X3/X2/*X1*/Z1/T2 Series" ? If you go to the "What ATI graphics cards can use this driver?" part of the FAQ do you get an answer? No. You get "currently supports Radeon 8500 and later AGP". Is an X1400 *later* than an 8500? Ugh). Anyway .. enough complaining. :) I have used both methods shown by the links below to install the ATI drivers and had success each time on this Thinkpad T60p with the v5200. I don't know about an X1400 however. Here are the links: http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT7527984757.html http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/05/12/suse-101-ati-drivers-installation/ (The second one is written up with the older 8.24.8 drivers .. still applies if you use the newer drivers) If you are not using the ATI drivers then you may have hit a problem with the xorg radeon driver. During the beta cycle there was information indicating that you need to replace the "Driver" section in the xorg.conf with "radeon10b" due to problems with the older driver. If you do that and then go into yast you can configure Xinerama mode and it should work. - Bruce -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Indeed I do get that! I had to go change the video mode in grub to get it to work correctly. I'm hoping that the next release of the ATI drivers will fix this, although of course they would have to know about it somehow (anyone know if ATI has a bug reporting page?). Unfortunately (?) changing the video mode puts you back into a mode where you get to watch text stream by as the system boots. That is fine with me but may not be with everyone. That is another question I don't know the answer to: What is the criteria that chooses graphical vs text boot? Anyway, to do it you can either edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file or: Start yast Go to "System" Click on "Boot Loader" Select your "SUSE Linux 10.1" entry and click the "Edit" button. Select a lower-res "VGA Mode" from the pull-down. I use "800x600, 24 bits (mode789)". "Ok" your way out, reboot and all is well. - Bruce -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Dream on. No, ATI doesn't have a end user bug reporting page. They don't even have that something like that for us, though contact has improved a bit lately. I've just tried the 8.26.18 driver that was released yesterday and there is unfortunately no change for this behaviour. But changing the vga= mode in grub isn't too bad a workaround. As for entering bugs, there is a feedback section which allows you to enter a problem report for the Linux drivers - just don't pick "notebook" as they are unsupported, despite the one driver supporting all cards (including notebooks). Will the update also fix the problems with X hanging if you switch to console? Someone mentioned earlier that it is a problem with SUSE's X packages and not with the fglrx driver. Fantastic! It's so bad that if my screen goes into DPMS, I have to switch off the notebook and switch on again. Which means I cannot close the lid without shutting down first. OK, I haven't seen an update for X yet, but I did get the new ATI driver, 8.26.18, released on 26 June 2006. This has solved the freezing issue I had when switching between X and console. I'm still puzzled at why my FPS in gears is about 300 lower than it was in 10.0. I'm getting around 630 FPS in window mode, and around 120-130 FPS on fgl_glxgears. I don't quite agree. My X1400 is supported and working well on 10.0. I just couldn't get it working on 10.1. Using the 8.24 driver, my pc just hangs when I do the sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx and when I use the newer 2.25 driver, the created rpm cannot install due to a dependency failure. I read in another thread that forcing the install does not work, so I just reverted back to 10.0. I will give 10.1 another go when the new ATI driver is released.
