[opensuse] Any way to use GPS provided by a wireless data card?
If anyone knows of a better place to ask this question - please speak up. I use umtsmon on SuSE with a Sierra Wireless 881U "datacard" (provided by AT&T) for an Internet connection. It works good for that. According to the card's packaging that came from AT&T, and according to the Sierra Wireless website, the 881U device supports GPS capabilities. No, I'm am not talking about GPRS - it supports GPRS for data, too - but it also claims to provide GPS functions, or at least some version of it - Sierra calls it "Tru-locate". Here's Sierra's blurb about Tru-locate: "High performance GPS antenna for a quick and accurate fix on your location. User Scenarios * Mobile professionals often find themselves in new areas or cities with no way to find their way around * Bulky printed or out-of-date maps are a hassle * GPS hardware/software can be expensive TRU-Locate™ Solution * Determine where you are, and how to get where you need to be. o Easily integrate with Google Maps, Microsoft Live, Mapquest etc… o Supports 3rd party applications for Route Optimization, Dispatch and Resource Monitoring o Standalone, Static-GPS Assisted, A-GPS capabilities supported * Customers will experience enhanced location services with Sierra Wireless products." I'm trying to get some information on using those capabilites from Linux. Ideally I'd like to be able to use it with Google Maps, but anything else would be a start. If I could at least query the device manually, and get coordinates from it. But I'm having a bad time finding any information about using the GPS functions.. I've read a few things on the web that suggest the AT&T branded cards need to have a flash firmware update to "unlock" the GPS functionality. I'm not sure if that's true, since the AT&T packaging mentioned GPS also. But either way I'm willing to update the firmware if I need to. However, I haven't found any information about using GPS on Linux with the correct firmware updates, either. I thought perhaps somebody here would know something about accessing the GPS interface on the card. Or any other wireless data card: while I do use the 881U, I'd be willing to consider switching to a card that provides better GPS support (better meaning, more Linux-friendly). Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
