btw... have you read about the 21264? the new Alpha CPU its double as fast as the merced... NOW ((INTEL IS DOG MEAT)) its actually will have 150 SpecInt and 100 Specfp well to bad it will be very expensive on begin later it will hopefully be priced same as 21164 now Steve Don't be bagging on AMD! -----Original Message----- From: Fred A. Yes, however, there are other processors out there that are superior in other way to the p2, for instance the k6 (both versions). D.n says

much better? The best way to succeed at getting somewhere in the standings is to get multiple computers, not just one good one. (besides, the more comps running linux, the better:) )
Nothing personal, but AMD processors suck. They have terrible floating point performance. AMD's running quake2 timedemos run a consistent 10-20 fps (frames per second) behind intel units of the same clock speed. Quake 2 benchmarks are a great guage of performance, because most people like running entertainment software and it takes a hell of a lot more muscle to push a game than it does to run an office suite. Go check out some of the benchmarks at Tom's or Anandtech, AMD is only viable if you are anti-intel or can't afford intel. Also, the 3Dnow instruction set that was supposed to increase AMD gaming performance still delivers far below intel numbers. I just don't see a convincing argument for any of the intel socket 7 competitors, they all deliver sub-standard performance.
This bring up an aside question. Is Quake-2 available on CD from the author (I can't find it locally or most mail order), and have you run it. If so, impressions? I've been looking for a GOOD game for Linux and haven't found one yet.
Thanks,
Fred
