[opensuse] What is most popular / best - mythtv or vdr ?
I am replacing my aging Nokia sat-receiver+ harddisk-recorder, and thought I'd have a look at building a new one myself. I've known about vdr (http://www.tvdr.de/) for a few years now, I guess since ct created ctvdr, but mythtv is relatively new to me. Opinions please - which one is currently ahead? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-2.8°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks - any particular reason or are you just more familiar with mythtv? It looks like mythtv is more current than vdr, but it's difficult to tell any real differences in functionality. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-2.7°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That is 0.23 version but since it is a susestudio appliance one can clone and upgrade it with a new build adding or removing packages. Or once installed you can upgrade via zypper or yast Togan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm running myth-tv, it's got a lot of features, but can be a bear to setup, and really isn't well supported on oS, I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. (Note: Charles Phillip Chan, who at least get's the list has it up and running quite well on oS.) If you are comfortable with git and compiling from source, I'd suggest you check out 0.24-fixes. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm running 0.24 from packman on opensuse 11.3. It's a little less stable than 0.23 for me (it's crashed a few times when playing longer videos) but it's mostly working well Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Good to hear, there are a couple of oS11.3 users on the myth list and they both have talked about doing the git and compile over what's available for oS. I'm running Jean-Yves Avennard's tweaked myth, it's quite stable, and i get updates for it about once a month, he ports directly from trunk, so I'm just back from the edge. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why not MythBuntu? http://www.mythbuntu.org/ All the grunt work done for you. I have to say I did not find MythTV to be that hard to set up. I followed the directions pages and compiled from source. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I found it quite the bear, all of the good info was debian based, and it took me months to work it all out on oS. I did look at mythbuntu, and mythdora, and knopmyth, which just plain worked with very little tinkering. The bad part was working out the issues I had with LIRC ( it worked then it broke), v4l (I have a web cam and had to do some research on udev) and my sound card didn't work quite right in oS ( odd that one, kernel drivers ought to be kernel drivers across any distro). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm using the packman 0.23 version on openSUSE 11.3 as I found the 0.24 a bit too unstable. This url has all the relevant info on how to set up MythTV on openSUSE. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/OpenSuSE_11.3 I found the Ubuntu series too difficiult to administer when compared to openSUSE. -- Regards, Graham Smith -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I suggested to a Windows-type colleague that he try mythbuntu for his home setup. His main complaint was that it seemed very difficult to deviate from the predefined locations for things (videos, music and such). He said he fought with it a bit and decided to go the Windows route. I admit the details are sparse. But I expect that configurablility when you leave the norm could be an issue. Especially if you are not a software tinkerer. I believe the OP has been known to tinker a bit :) Yours sincerely, Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Office: Int +46 10-615 60 20 Mobile: Int +46 70-815 1696 roger.oberholtzer@ramboll.se ________________________________________ Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O.
