I was just looking through the SuSE 10.0 CD and noted the conspicuous absence of Audacity. Is there a SuSE rpm out there that I've missed? Does anyone know why it was omitted from the distro? Thanks. -- Bill Lugg Milstar Software Support Peterson AFB, CO

Packman has it. Go to <http://www.opensuse.org/YaST_package_repository#Packman> and select a mirror.

I recommend avoiding the U.S. mirror. Two installation attempts there both hung part way through the file transfer phase. Switching to the Austrian mirror allowed a prompt installation. Randall Schulz

Well, that's a start. I downloaded the rpm and the first thing it complained about was a missing libmad.so(0) (64-bit). So, I did some poking around and found an rpm for FC4 that miraculously worked. I then reran the audacity rpm file and it installed without a problem. So, then I start it up and, after asking for the language, I get this error: There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer. You will not be able to play or record audio. Error: Host error. I went to YaST and checked the soundcard configuration and ran the test on the Volume dialog and it seems to work fine. FWIW, it's a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Value (SB0400) using the alsa emu10k1 driver. I'm able to playback MP3 files, however, it appears that I can't play a CD using KsCD either. The CD's play, but no audio is heard. So, what exactly is audacity referring to as the "audio i/o layer"? How do I go about fixing this? Is there a connection to the CD playing problem? Frankly, I'm not sure I even know what's wrong to begin looking for a solution. I've gone through the KsCD docs and got to the point of it telling me to switch to direct audio playback in the Settings dialog, but the checkbox it tells me to check doesn't seem to exist. The bottom line is that I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Thanks in advance for the help. -- Bill Lugg Milstar Software Support Peterson AFB, CO On Monday 12 December 2005 7:51 am, Randall R Schulz wrote:

After sending this I perused the Startup Log briefly. I found that it successfully starts the sound driver (obviously, since I can play sounds from the computer), but following that is the line "grep: /proc/asound/seq/oss: No such file or directory". Is this a part of the problem described below? If so, how do I fix it? Thanks again. Bill On Monday 12 December 2005 10:48 pm, William H Lugg wrote:

Are you sure that your CD is hooked up to the sound card? Usually takes a separate cable to get sound from a CD.

I checked and it is. I tried the CD in my other machine that has a PCI 512 in it and everything works fine. This Audigy card, on the other hand, seems to be a bit problematic. -- Bill Lugg Milstar Software Support Peterson AFB, CO On Tuesday 13 December 2005 7:58 am, Bruce Marshall wrote:

Well, from some help on the Audacity list, we've determined that the kernel in SuSE 10 as it was installed on my machine is not supporting the OSS sound layer. How do I go about installing this support? I've searched a bit for this and couldn't find anything conclusive on how to make this happen.
