15.4 install to 2nd Drive - How to Insure YAST does NOT mess with Windows on /dev/sda?
All, This really asks -- what is the default behavior for YAST if it sees Windows on sda with os_prober? I do NOT want YAST to touch the window drive, I don't want the boot sector modified, I don't want grub put there, I don't want chainloaded options for dual-boot, etc... With either 423 or 15.0 I have YAST think it was okay to modify the windows install and put grub there with options to chainload windows (which was hell finding out how to restore the boot loader on Windows (I don't want to be thrown into that briar-patch again -- ouch) So if I'm installing to sdb, and windows is sda, what do I need to do to tell YAST not to touch sda? -- David C. You know, Leap 15.4 is not officially released. I have a UEFI dual boot setup, Windows 10 on one SSD (sda) with one FAT boot partition, Leap 15.3 plus Tumbleweed on an other SSD (sdb) also with one FAT boot partition. UEFI-Bios is set to start the Linux partition first, it could be the other way round but I have not checked whether I could start Leap from a Windows boot-menu, if there is any. Leap (YAST) provides a Windows entry in its boot menu and you can set a boot-priority. In case Windows messes up after an update (it happened once), I simply start Leap via UEFI-BIOS and let it read in its bootloader again, finished. Peter

I have not tried 15.4, but on previous installs there is a menu somewhere in the expert partitioner where you can mark and tell yast what exact disks or partitions to use. I can not tell you exactly where it is, because I would need to boot the installer on a machine that already has several partitions to refresh my memory, and I don't like rebooting my machine to do that. <https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/startup/html/book-startup/cha-install.html#sec-yast-install-partitioning> 3.7 Partitioning 3.7.1 Important information ... 3.7.2 Suggested partitioning ... I do recall that setting, though I generally end up deleting the Yast suggestions and just telling it to use one partition of ext4 for the laptop. I also recall configuring it to only install to sdb, but that it put the boot loader on sda anyway. To be safe I'll probably just put another hdd in the first bay and then do the install. That way if os_prober decides to modify the boot sector of sda, at least it will just be another Linux install. Thanks Carlos. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Welcome. But if you use this feature, and the boot goes to sda, you should report in bugzilla. You should also review carefully what yast says in the boot section before giving it the go ahead. If you are using traditional, non-uefi boot, you can also tell it not to modify the boot sector. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Thanks Leslie, That's what I did. At first Yast proposed using swap from 15.0 on /dev/sdb1 and added a new 8M BIOS Boot partition (even though I'll never use it). Yast complains very loudly if you delete it and build a partition scheme without it. So I recreated it and just left it -- As Carlos said -- it's not hurting anything and may come in handy later. Blew the rest away, added 2G swap on sda, and a 40G / and rest of 500G went to /home -- all ext4. 15.4 Beta install went well, KDE3 up and purring like a kitten again, just have some timeouts to fix on boot (15.4 takes 48 sec to boot, compared to 15.0 that boots in 12 -- usually a network timeout) So far so good. -- David C.
