Hi My cd-rom wont mount when I put a music cd in the player. It mounts fine if I put a cd containing lets say programs from a computer magazine. It complains that there of an In/Out error, and says that it can't determine the silesystem type?? Can anyone help me on this matter?? Thomas

You don't mount music cds. They're not mountable. Just fire up your favourite music cd player, press play and enjoy //Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'
OK, I understand..but when I run xmms it cant locate any files on the cd..and if I run Kscd it seems to play the cd but no sound comes out..and sound is activated since I get sound when kde starts...frankly, I am very confused :) söndag 23 juni 2002 18:14 skrev Anders Johansson:

For xmms: go to options->preferences. Click on "CD Audio Player" and click configure. Make sure the correct device is entered, and note the directory listed there (or enter another directory. /media/cdrom is the common choice in SuSE). Then, when you go to the playlist to add files, you should see the cd audio tracks when you select the directory you have in the preferences. For CD sound in general: start the mixer (kmix, for instance) and make sure the cd audio input isn't muted, and that it's set to a reasonable level. //Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

What it took me time to learn is that, though SuSE-7.3 file system is /media/cdrom, you have to go with /cdrom only if you want xmms to list the tracks
and if I run Kscd it seems to play the cd but no sound comes out..and sound is activated since I get sound when kde starts... Oh, yes, I know the feeling... It took me more than one year to learn what was wrong with MY system (I know nothing about yours). I wondered for a looonng time why I had sound when playing .wav files (KDE launching, etc.), yet no pip when I attempted to play CD-audio. I clicked on the ikon, the tray came out to receive the disc, I could hear the drive spinning, the pilot light flickering, but sound? No way! Finally, one day, I opened together all mixers I had (alsamixer, gamix, gmix and kmix) and started playing with them. It was then that I learned that three of them were connected with each other, but not gamix. When you change the controls on one of the three, the respective controls on the other two go accordingly, but gamix has two controls which the others don't have and--more importantly--can't be controlled by the others: input accumulator and output accumulator. The first one I don't know what it does, but the second one, _if_it_is_not_up_all_ _the_way, NO audio! So, lesson one was: make sure gamix output accumulator is up. Lesson two: remove gamix altogether. Isn't that odd? If gamix is present, the output accumulator control has to be up, but it makes no difference if you delete the mixer!
frankly, I am very confused :) Welcome to the club.
PS:
You don't mount music cds. They're not mountable. Just fire up your favourite music cd player, press play and enjoy Yes, it took me a little while to learn that.
