The mail client balsa, which is the default in gnome, can not send any mail using Suse 8.1 - or at least, not with postfix. Can this be solved somehow? I haven's seen a patch for it so far. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

For some reason, Suse disabled esmtp sending on their compilation (they passed the parameter "--with-esmtp=no" to configure). This has to be enabled or balsa doesn't know how to talk to the local or remote smtp server, but it tries to call sendmail instead (I guess); as the default is postfix, even if postfix installs a /usr/sbin/sendmail program, balsa fails to send mail that way. So, to get balsa working the sources from the dvd have got be installed and recompiled with the option "--with-esmtp". This requires library "libesmtp" installed, but it is not included on the dvd: you have to get it from "http://www.stafford.uklinux.net/libesmtp/", and compile/install it (I used version 1.0). I wonder why this happened... perhaps they didn't test gnome at all! :-? Balsa is the default mail client in gnome: at least I got it as an icon on the top panel bar, so I assume it is the default. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
